Gold dollar conversations usually involve pitch forks and angry riots here on SRP but to answer the OP's question IMO the 208 is the best out of the Gold Dollar series... I currently have 15 of them that I bought for dirt cheap. I attribute my honing abilities to GD now I hope to get the ability to regrind custom gold dollars, shoulder less, barbers notch what have u and make custom scales. In hopes that it will give me the foundation to start grinding out some 01 steel and making a custom razors. Once all said and done I hope to have the 3 year plan to start foraging my own blades... And the gold dollar I'm planning on starting it all with is the 208

I will help explain this to end the mis-understanding.

The GD convo's here have a lot of weight behind them that the common member does not see.

People are sent here to stir it up so others can sell these razors. They unrealistically hype them up where the new guys get their heads filled up with dreams of the next great razor on the cheap. I will not get into the good or bad of these razors as that has been beat to death.

Nothing against the GD, just against the peddling for profit that happens with them. And yes, I know other razors are hyped , but understand that it is very difficult to push many $700 razors. A razor that goes for cheap, that's easy.

So I hope you have a better understanding, if even a bit, about the background behind the GD here and on other forums. Many people have made a living modifying these guys , so they need to get pushed.

My opinion, if you want cheap then get them, if you want quality get just about anything that's not them or Pakistani. So you can make a razor that will shave with some work, but why? I can buy decent razors to put the time into and I'll have a decent razor that I can actually sell without having to overcome the bad rep. I myself have never purchased cheap, maybe inexpensive but it,lol be quality, a turd will always be a turd , reground or not, with new scales or not, but you will never have to defend a well made razor from some company that used craftsmen to make. So end etch the lesson. Buy whatever you like it's your money, but I worked hard for mine and won't spend a nickel on junk. Tc

I have 2 Gold Dollar razors. One is from wet shaving products on amazon. The other is a generic piece of garbage. The WSP GD208 hone well and I get a decent shave from it. It has all the usual stampings and etchings, whereas the garbage piece is plain with no stampings or etchings. I used both to learn to hone before moving on to new, nice razors. I'm one who recommends a beginner get a WSP GD 208 to learn honing with. If it shaves, great. If not, keep honing it. Btw, I use the garbage GD to shave the back of my neck.

If it takes you 15 minutes to shave, that translates to 90 hours a year. So getting a GD for $10 and paying $30 for shipping and honing saves you $60 over a Ralph Aust. Over a year's use you are saving 60 cents an hour using an inferior razor! That comes down to about 15 cents per shave. If the GD edge wears faster it is likely more expensive than the Aust over the course of two years.

    *whispers to the popcorn crowd*

Interesting how every time someone makes a mention of torches, forks and pitches, even if it's for display purposes only, it doesn't actually serve the intended purpose. It's like saying "I brought my display window, here, look how pretty". Goes without saying that there is a lock and a key that opens it.... and before you know it, someone else has brought theirs, as well. Then someone says, "You know, there is a good reason A for having all this stuff on display!". Another one goes, "Well, not only A, but look at reason B!"... and so it goes, on and on and before you know it, the keys are clinging and the locks clicking. [emoji13]

Pass the salt? *crunch, crunch, crunch....*

Like so many things, it's all about priorities.

I enjoy driving, so I have a Subaru and not a Daewoo or Great Wall or Hyusung. Nothing wrong with those cars - they drive people from point A to point B, and they are cheaper. But my Subaru is a better car and I enjoy driving it.

I like writing, so I have a good fountain pen (a few actually). Nothing wrong with a Bic biro - writes words on paper, and they are cheaper. But my fountain pens are better pens.

I enjoy shaving, so I have good razors. Nothing wrong with most Gold Dollars - deal with the geometry and get them honed properly and they'll shave you, and they are cheaper. But my other razors are better.

This is a forum devoted to straight razors and shaving with them. It's not like we are unaware that GDs exist. It's not like many of us haven't tried them, or honed them, or received them from other people for perusal or whatever. And yet whenever someone raises a GD thread they are "shocked" at the response they get here...??? Why? They have been assessed, and they have been found wanting. Many, many years ago.

    To put it bluntly.

Now I'm not saying you started this thread to stir anything up. But surely you can understand why these "GDs are as good as anything I've ever tried!!" threads *do* stir things up.
