I was thinking on this. Some people go to Nordstroms, Saks Fifth Avenue, Brooks Brothers ......... others go to Walmart, or if they want to step up, Target. Some buy their Florsheim shell cordovans, and others go to Payless shoe stores and buy whatever.
That is sort of the way I see gold dollars. I have never tried one, only saw one up close and personal for the first time a week ago. Guy says he gets a decent shave. If I had no other choice I might go for one myself. Just the idea of a razor that costs less than two bucks ....... in 2015 ...... turns me off. Still, for the frugal, the guy who really can't afford anything else, or the curious, I'm glad it is there for them. I've heard of bad gold dollars, but I've never had a bad dubl duck.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2Jimmy I'd strongly advise anyone to have a go with a Gold Dollar that's been properly honed tbh.
It wasn't my first razor and it's not my favourite but I maintain that it is a very nice shaver indeed.
I'm not snotty about it and it's sure not pretty but that's just how the 208 I have stacks up.
I currently have a TI, a cheap new Dovo favorit, a 1880s Kaufmann, G&F adoration deluxe, dubl duck Goldedge and a dublduck wonderedge. All in excellent condition btw.
I always strop them the same using the same favourite cordovan shell strop.
Maybe my stropping is crap and ruins the good edges I dunno haha.
By far my favourite is the adoration deluxe blade btw.I'll swear the blade makes hairs give a faint noise like guitar strings being plucked as it approaches each whisker :-)Last edited by Daniele; 10-01-2015 at 07:36 PM.

Daniele, just a question if I may. From your name spelling might you be female? I know you are in London but I do not think that would make a difference in the spelling.

Thanked: 2It's the Italian form of Daniel.
Daniela is the female version and Daniele is the male.
I didn't pick it, it was a present for my birthday :-P

just for giggles...
Gold Dollar has been bashed so bad and yet they manage to stick a around. a couple websites even sell them for $49.99, one with custom scales. they don't advertise them as equal to the big boys, but entry level. even people on here play around with them. some even say they can get a excellent shave out of them. They more people bash them, the more I seem to want one. heavily modified by someone from here of course."Everybody owes, everybody pays. Because that's how you stand up against the rising of the tide."

Thanked: 2Not at all Iz, I only know this because I'm Italian :-)
As for the GDs I accept that many could be good enough to bin and that's why they're not considered a quality blade.
I guess some people just hit lucky or have either found someone who can get a fine edge on one or have spent the time to sort that edge themselves.
I can only vouch for the 208 mind the 66 I found not so good and if they use different types of steel for different models then I haven't a clue for the others in the range....yet.
At a few quid for a blade they're worth experimenting with.
The class of a blade shows on the face imho...and with a face as classy as mine I'm not fussy about where the blade came from haha

I've been at this straight razor thing for awhile now....fell down the rabbit hole of RAD and as of late CAD (coticule acquisition disorder)... I've read about the good, bad, and ugly of GD's....Sooooo, had to find out for myself.....$24 got 2 GD 66's delivered to my door from the bay....20 minutes with my dremel, some hone time, got a nice shave...still one more to "play" with...Is it as good as my Dovo's, W&B's, etc... IMHO, no....but it was-is a good learning experience for razor mods and honing...time for some new scales next...
