This reminds me of a saying back in the 50-60s. kind of like owning a dodge auto. A good auto just a little ashamed of it.

Not ashamed enough to not buy the razor in the OP.

As far as not selling, could be because it was "used" and not "brand new" anymore
I ended up giving it away to a friend. I have given and sold many razors that I love for many reasons ranging from needing money for something else to wanting to help someone out.

All of us have. I guess I just don't see the point in trying to raise money by selling a $3 razor, and especially parting with one that I love for a few dollars. I've certainly given away razors that won't sell for what I thought they're worth, but that's because I didn't need the money and I didn't love them to justify keeping.

In any case from what I've seen to make money on these you need to put up a moderate marketing campaign and get a good number of people extolling your added value. Otherwise you're simply competing with the flood of the stock from the factory.

Ill admit it. I just ordered one of these a couple days ago. I'll hone it, play around with it until I'm bored then junk it or give it away. The main reason I ordered it was to get a look at the scales. I've got decent blades in my "to do" pile that have busted scales. Some won't clean up well enough to justify the time and effort of making scales for them. If the GD scales are functional I may throw them on one of those blades. A few bucks for functional scales seems reasonable to me.. If nothing else, a few dollars is worth it to keep me amused for a bit.

Whenever I see a gold dollar thread I can't help but wonder how many of the posters have actually handled a GD and how many are just repeating what theyve heard other say about them.

If you need functional replacement scales, get them from Revisor: Spare parts

To answer you other question: I have handled them. Their steel is all right. Their execution is somewhere between all right and not quite all right. You get what you pay for. Speaking of which, you simply cannot go wrong with buying bulk.

Wow Robin! I didn't know Revisor offered all of that! Even with shipping to USA it is still a great deal PLUS they are an excellent family to deal with. Thanks for the link. I am bookmarking this now.

I recently sharpened 2 razors for a friend, a Dovo Best Quality and a Bismarck.
While he waited for them I gave him a 66 that I honed and asked him to report back on the shaving experience and how it compared to the German lot.
I was surprised that he said that the 66 was more forgiving than the Dovos.
He said he only needed 2 passes which I think speaks volumes for the $5 Chinese razor.
I've honed quite a few thousand razors over the years and I think that you can't find a brand new razor for
under £60 that will match it.

You can get Aust and Revisor razors for under GBP 70. And they are in a different league entirely, but that is nitpicking.

Did he also report back after you'd sharpened the Germans? Curious to know whether was your honing or the razor?
