    Default Pierre Thiers Historic Razors

Has anyone noticed that most vendors are out of these? Is it possible that they've finally sold all 450 of them?

    Regards,

Shaving and Razor Shop in Antwerp are showing as having one in stock, although I know they sold one at the weekend as they were showing two when I looked on sunday.

I thought about buying another one of these (I sold mine to joel) but the price is a little steep for me, I went with one of the limited edition horn covered tang models from classicshaving, which were forged around the same time.

Those horn covered tang models are rumored to also have been hand hammered by ol' Pierre himself. I heard that from Joel Ferman. I don't know how true but it seems plausible. I have one myself along with an historic Pierre Thiers Hammered. I'm thinking of selling both as I just don't use them. They're both very nice razors and both limited in number.

    EL,
I was told the same thing by my contact at TI. I think the covered tang models were produced in even smaller numbers. I have 3 versions of those too, a just under 5/8 marked Sheffield, a just under 6/8 marked Sheffield and a just under 6/8 marked Spartacus, all with horn covered tangs and horn scales. I have one of the Pierre Thiers limited ones as well. Rarely used but a keeper.

I do have a discontinued Egyptian in Palmwood though one could twist my arm to part with <g>.

Yeah I heard similar - I was told to keep my mouth shut and not to let the secret out!

Here's what they say about them at Knifecenter, who stock the eagle stamped version of the same razor.

Collectible Eagle Brand Straight Razor Horn Handle and Bolsters-- From old forgings dating back to between 80 and 100 years old. Completely Hollowed, both sides mirror polished with gold leaf mark--Handle is blond solid horn, and "tail pieces" are also colored solid horn. Only 260 pcs. of these forgings are in existence.
    A note from Thiers-Issard:
We no longer have the dies for these forgings. Very close to a current 5/8" size. The forged "gorge" or ferrule makes this a stylistic step above normal razors, a bit like a forged bolster on a knife! These were in their times very classy razors, certainly meant to be top-of-the-line compared to a normal straight razor. A great deal of hand work goes into polishing the gorge and also into fitting and riveting on the tiny "tail pieces."
Incidentally, all of the different COLLECTIBLE razors and the Damascus, were hardened, milled and polished, sharpened etc. by Mr. Fayet, our most skilled razor maker (and certainly the best razor maker in the world at this time.) He has been making razors for Thiers-Issard continously for over 45 years!

Yep I got the same admonition. They're nice razors and shave very well but they're no different than some of the other top of the line razors around today. So I didn't see what the big secret was. The historic aspect is what gives them their value. Never again will another razor be hammered out by Pierre Thiers.

    EL

Not so sure about the hand hammered applying to the covered tang razors. TI mentions dies, and a bolster shape like that is surely a die forging not a hand formed shape. The leaf and vine, Egyptians, etc... are all examples of die forged designs.

Well, I went and got myself one of the tang-covered razors from TI. It sure is a beaute. The one I got has very blond scales and very dark horn coverings on the tang, which is a very nice contrast. I have no idea if the razor was really forged, or made, or ever touched at all by The Man himself, but hey I'm still expecting it to be a fantastic shave anhow. (But looking at it, the blade spine is not as symetrical as one would expect from a not-hand-made verson, so ... ??)

Tomorrow's shave is set now ...
