Comparing and imagining before you choose is half the fun - whether you're considering guns, cars, razors, whatever! You measured your process in hours, I measure mine in websites. Started at Amazon, wandered here and then to one other forum and two merchant websites until finally figuring out what the frequent references to SRD were about. My shopping cart there currently holds a Ralf Aust French point and a red latigo strop.

SRD is awesome! They hooked me up.

My Aust is very nice, you'll enjoy yours. If I were to measure full time considering my options it would be impossible to measure. But I enjoyed the learning process. That's what it's about. At least for me.

As has been said ad infinitum, take your time. Your initial efforts aren't very likely to be BBS but stick with it. Once you establish some muscle memory it will turn into just the way you shave every day (only cooler than most folks). You'll suddenly lose track of the last time you drew blood and everything will be cool. Most of all, enjoy it, have fun. The real beauty of a straight is its ability to make shaving (a task that for most guys these days is drudgery to be avoided at all cost) an indispensible part of the day and a good Zen experience to just relax and think about everything or think about nothing at all as required. Good luck and congratulations.
