    Default Texan made straights

I'm from Texas and have just recently jumped into wetshaving, I'm looking to now expand and build onto my new hobby. Being born and raised in Texas i was wondering if there are any straight razors that were made in Texas and if so how could i get my hands on one.

The first razors that come to mind are the early Sumate razors, which were made in Texas prior to the company's move to St. Louis, Missouri. Good luck finding one as they rarely seem to turn up and are sought after by those of us who have a love of Shumate razors.

How would you be able to tell if it was made in Texas or Missouri if i were to come across one?

A lot of people have started by getting a beginners straight razor and strop at Larrys "Whipped Dog". Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment

That way, if they decide that it is not for them they are not out too much money. Other than that, you can probably get something good on the Buy, Sell, Trade on the top of the page.

I got my first straight razor from the old Classifieds section (now Buy/Sell/Trade) and would recommend that route for anyone looking for their first straight razor. The members here tend to price their razors appropriately and the majority of those offered are shave ready.

I can also suggest that you try to find a member near you who is willing to act as a mentor. Not only will one of these gentlemen help you develop your technique, some may have extra kit that they can loan someone new to the hobby.

Welcome to SRP. You could place on ad in the Buy-Sell-Trade WTB (want to buy) for a Shumate made in Tx, Austin IIRC. They are scarce to find in real nice condition since they were more often than not used regularly. They come up on ebay once in a blue moon. Condition is the most important thing with used razors, so keep that in mind when you're checking them out.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
