    Default No-name straight

( Solingen Black Handled Straight Razor )

Is this actually made in Solengen, or is it a Paki blade with "Solengen" stamped on the tang?

Has anyone bought one of these? Are they any good?

    Might be a Fromm/Giesen-Forstoff/Dovo....
O/W your guess is as good as mine.

Looks like those are sold to be engraved with what you want on them.
They might be ok, but then again, they might not.

Looks like the low end dovo, I bought one several years ago for about 5$ less from classic. With the other dovo blades on the page that would be my guess. If interested in it I would call/email the seller and ask.

That is a high price for a "no name". You would be smarter to buy a low end Dovo. But your best bet is the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here. Make sure the razor is both honed and shave tested.

I've been wondering about those as well - I picked up one from a knife shop in AZ a couple of years ago for about $40 without knowing anything about shving with a straight (ie had no strop, no technique etc). Was naturally dissapointed with the result at the time but even with the misuse it kept a fair edge and I now use it as a travel razor. I haven't honed it, just stropped it and it serves well (obviously could do with a good hone however) so I didn't think it was a Pakistani razor as by all account they will not keep an edge.

This style was my first razor. It was a great shaver and had no problems with it. As I started collecting razors I gave it to a friend to learn with and he loves it ,so its his now.
This is a good razor for someone not too sure that they may not stick with straight razor shaving. A good gift for a newbe.

I think that's a good point. I see that the "no-frills" Dovo straights are pretty well priced and I won't be buying a "pig in a poke" if you know what I mean.

The reason I was thinking about those is because I'm looking for something with a plain blade. I want to have some custom etching/engraving on the there, then add a nice set of scales. I'm thinking about putting together a nice customized shaving set as a gift for my son when he gets old enough to move out on his own. He's six years old now, so I'm really planning ahead.

What I'm envisioning is a pair of straights, a Norton hone, and some kind of paddle strop that will all fit into a nice wooden case that is compact and sturdy enough to travel, but nice enough to sit on his dresser.
