that's the wrong question - the value is in the eyes of the beholder. the company doesn't exist anymore, so the only reference point is the market of vintage razors, e.g. ebay, the classifieds...
you've seen the current prices on ebay, as far as i can tell they have been steadily going up.
you'll probably get a better deal here, not guaranteed of course, but the price is decided between you and the seller, while on ebay is between the top two bidders.

the question is how badly do you want one of them?

7/8 is a fairly rare size. just find what the current production 7/8 razors cost as a reference. depending what you value (shaveability, collectabillity, cosmetics) it will be either an excellent deal or may be an ok purchase.

yeah they are branded by the same company - a barber supply vendor who didn't make razors themselves, just put their labels on stuff they contracted out.

Because it looks cool ? I wonder about that myself. The first time I ever saw one I thought it was weird that they would put a symbol of death on the handle of a razor and then stamp Lifetime on the tang. I still think it is weird.

I guess they are rare and if you start collecting ducks for the different models you will want to have one. Mine is a great shaver. Honed up in a jiffy and shaves smooth as silk.

If I am not mistaken, the Grim Reaper is the predecessor (and equivalent to?) the Lifetime razor. I believe these are supposed to be one step up the line from the Wonderedge. Then again, I could be wrong; it's been quite a while since I stopped reading all I could about the Ducks.

The Reapers also seem to be quite rare, as was previously stated, or, even if they are not actually rare, they don't seem to be up for sale. (There could be millions out there, but if no one will sell one, supply will still be low.) And with Ducks being collectors items for some reason...

Count the numbers, for every 20-30 Wonderedge's that pop up on the Bay you will see 1 Reaper and it probably looks like the one that just sold for $255... (bad blade)
I have seen 6 Reapers in 2 1/2 years of using the search parameters on e-bay 3 were crap 2 were good 1 was exellent.... I bought 2 of them...

I would highly recommend that you target a SatinEdge, great shavers and good prices, the Number 1 would be my second choice....
Dwarf is right in there too...

If you send me a PM with what you really are after and the price you are looking for I can probably find you a good one...

    BTW re-pinning a DD de-values the razor...

The reaper was the top of the line Lifetime and predates all the edge types like satinedge and goldedge etc and it was relatively rare to begin with. I think in all the time I've been straight shaving which about 6+ years now I've only seen maybe 2 or 3 reapers in really good condition. Most are really in so so shape. If a NIB old stock came up (which I've never seen) I'd be afraid to even think how much it would go for.

In the end though there is nothing special about the blade. Its all in the scales. Also DD sold a lifetime razor with the reaper on it which is not the grim reaper we always see. It has plainer scales but has the reaper on the scales.I know that because I have em both.

can I ask then, is this more of a collector thing? at that price point a custom can be had from chandler, harner or Josh for instance. I understand collectability and investment, just wondering from a shaving standponit if you'll get as good or better with a custom?

Red, I have one and it is a good shaver but I think that the inflated value is due to the collector rather then it being better then any other Duck. IMO ... FWIW Here is a pic of one right after I opened the package. I paid $100.00 for this one and it cleaned up and honed up nice but I would say I was lucky to get it for that even in that condition.
