I have to ask - Is the Le Grelot seriously heavier and that much better a straight razor or is it just people's limited experience with 1/4 -wedge ground razors that create the "Wow" factor of a new heavy blade as compared to most razors out there in the full hollow realm? I am not trying to insult anyone, I am just curious if it truly that much better a 1/4-wedge than say a wacker 1/4-wedge or...old school butcher wedge?

I wonder why they stamped "Spartacus" in all those blades, including some Le Grelot...

You can't compare a 5/8 Le Grelot wedge with a meat chopper 7/8 or 8/8. The quarter-hollow/wedge Le Grelot is not that heavy because, well, it's a 5/8! If it measured 7/8 or 8/8 it would weight considerably more, of course.
The Le Grelot is not and doesn't feel like a meat chopper. It feels more like a Wapi.

I think it's an exclusive to that site but may be very wrong. Paging blueprinciple, paging blueprinciple.

I thought all the 1/4 grind Le Grelots were 6/8s. Are there some 5/8s out there?

yes - my understanding was the le grelot 1/4's were 6/8. I have no experience with one nor have I even held one...yet I was more curious if they were truly a great razor among razors - a best value - or - part of the hype cycle of NOS blades. Again, am not trying to instigate anything here.

    andy,

In my experience, they are fine razors indeed. Great, I dunno, but they are really, really good. Right now the 7/8 Friodurs and I are doing the shaving dance, but I know that I'll return to the Le Grelots. When I first tried a Le Grelot 1/4 hollow, it was probably the best shave I had had to that point. If you get one, I think you will never regret it.

With their well earned reputation, in the unlikely circumstance that you don't like the razor, you will have no trouble selling it and getting your money back.

Ever check to see how many are for sale in the classifieds? Right, not a bunch. That's gotta say something. Oh, by the way, you'll never see any of mine for sale.

    good luck, good shaving

I broke down and ordered one for curiosity sakes - I figure best to check it out first hand

well, it arrived from Martin over at Rasupur in remarkably quick time (1 week).

Right now I am just debating if it goes up on the classifieds (no discounts - at cost since it would be unused) -or- take it for a spin this weekend on my saturday morning shave.

    ohhh what to do.

    Default I have 2...

From Martin. Shaved with one this morning. I have the black plastic 6/8 1/4 grinds, which are IMO a bargain. Among my favorite straights. A real bonus is that you can get them honed by Martin. These were the first "professionally honed" razors I received that were perfect for my use.

I currently have around 30 straights (there's a C-Mon Blackie in town that I feel drawn to -- make that 31). I think if I had to do with just one, it would probably be one of the Le Grelots.
