Mineral Oil for the Razor Blade
Gentlemen,
Many of you coat your blades lightly with mineral oil for extended storage or because of the long time span in your rotation due to a large razor collection.
Two questions:
1. How often do you oil your blades?
2. What mineral oil brand do you recommend?
Thanks.
Regards,
Obie

Thanked: 116I used different oils: mineral oil from Ikea (SKYDD, really cheap), 3-in-1 oil usually found in sewing machines shops or Japanese choji oil.
I didn't notice any measurable difference in performance. I've used the same oils for other antique blades without any problem.
I normally clean the razor with alcohol before shaving, then clean again and oil the razor after shaving. At one drop of oil a day, the Ikea bottle should last you more than a lifetime

I oil mine after each use. I just bought whatever Walgreens had. I wouldn't think brand would matter with mineral oil.

Hi,
I use generic mineral oil from Longs or Walmart. I oil after every shave, but not really because I'm worried about rust all over the razor-- I do it to keep rust off the edge of the blade. I put a few drops of oil on a tissue and "strop" the blade across it.

The only time I've used mineral oil was to help preserve the wood base from an old vintage japanese Hone I have. After soaking it in about 3 inches of mineral oil for about 3 days once I took it out the stuff was totally absorbed by the wood with no hint of oil on the surface.
So I don't know how effective mineral oil would be especially for long term storage. I use Sterol and for long term I use A.G Russell no rust which is silicon based. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 953I bought whatever Walgreens had too. Works great. Wipe down blade [including lightly strop-touching the edge over the oiled cloth) and scales (and inside of scales) after each use.

I oil carbon blades after every shave.I use camellia oil in a spray bottle.Just a little spritz on each side, then spread it with my fingers and do a stropping motion on the edge(carefully)with oily fingers.Got it at woodcraft.

I also find that it works well for maintaining old horn scales.Keeps them from drying out.
