All the best Razorguy, will be very keen to see some pics once you've finished. I think the secret to 'honing' a factory Gold Dollar is that it isn't so much a hone as a complete regrind of the bevel. So much so that bread-knifing the blade is a good option so at least you remove the patented GD wavy shaving edge. Also don't be shy as there's usually lots of material to remove - 3 layers or electrical tape on the spine and a 1000 grit waterstone at least (I usually go straight to a Norton 220 just to save time). But in the end I think you'll have a blade that will give surprisingly good shaves, which is the whole point after all.

    Good luck and enjoy!

My opinion, am not alone in this.
My Gold Dollar 66 is one of my best shavers. And there is no better option to learn how to hone from the ground up. For the money these cannot be beat.

OH! If you like a Gold dollar, that's great! I did recommend to get a Gold dollar instead of a Titan! Besides, a Titan costs money. A Gold Dollar, notsomuch.

Really? Maybe you could lay them side by side and report. It could be interesting to some. I see you are fairly new here and wonder if you have read this sticky atop this subforum: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...ar-razors.html ?
IMO, Titans are purely Gold Dollars and should be included there as should several "new" razor shaped objects now being introduced. Gold dollars have a bad rap, justifiably so. Naturally, they are now being "blinged" in order to sell and appeal to newer shavers and are still the same razor, whatever the name given them.
I have held both in-hand and have more than enough info for my "FYI". (which is more than I need, personally!) Good Luck!

I've learned quite allot about GD's there are other razor forums that don't shun them like they are here. I can turn one into a great shaving razor that will keep an edge in about 45 min. The fact is they are a not a Dovo, Boker, TI or such. But they are made of good steel and much can be learned from them. And at sub $4 each in bulk a great buy.

Oh Yes, lots say they learn from the Gold Dollars. I suppose it is subjective, but I might be so bold as to say a hardware store variety of a German razor made 80 years ago will not have a possibility of a wonky spine and other issues (which will impede those trying to learn by a great margin) and can be had for half or less than the Titans are going for and twice what a gold dollar goes for. I am not being a Gold-dollar disser, really, just stating facts which are proven and well-known. Keep in mind that those who love the things do indeed have a home (as you stated) where I suppose they are held in high esteem. There are also forums for Ford Pintos and AMC Gremlins, not to mention Trabants! My statement is that they have been proven to be bad razors HERE (at SRP) and it always irks me for someone to come to their defence. You can make a silk purse from a sow's ear, but it shall always be a sow's ear silk purse. I do know what it is like to root for the underdog, try to prove them wrong. It just is fruitless to me to go at it here. We have lost lots of great prospective members here going at the GD's and insisting on a razor club for them, etc and so forth.
If you have preservered to shave with one, you are indeed a member we need.
I did not mean to press insult, just wondered why you would buy another one, even in the guise of a Titan?

Learning to hone on a razor with geometry problem is probably not the best advice. it is wonderful that you like your GD and can enjoy the shave, that said you can put ivory scales, work the spine, goldleaf it, and in the end its still a GD. I dont see anybody given up their Friodor or
Doble Temple to get a GD. Besides GD have no soul........
