Thread: If You Could Have Only One Razor

I find it almost impossible to answer. I guess if I was on a desert island it would be a Robert Williams 9/8 with giraffe bone scales. Not that I particularly favor huge blades over medium sized but I happen to love everything about that particular razor.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 22Hard question to answer.
Of the razors I've got now, the Wade Wingfield, Rowbothom & Co.
It's a 6/8ths 1/2 hollow with an oblique point. A marvellous razor, but still one always hopes to find something better, doesn't one?

Yes, it is a difficult question to answer, especially if you have many, many great shavers (too many to list). BUT, if I were forced to choose, it would be my Robert Williams with mammoth tooth ivory scales. Beautifully balanced with an edge that gives me unbelievable shaves!

One of the older W&B Bow's. 6/8, half hollow, square point with a stylized tip, classy etching on the blade (just text in normal font), black horn scales, metal spacer.
Then again, I really like my Greaves with thumb and finger notches, quarter hollow grind, 6/8, large notch/Spanish point and a nice smile in horn (or maybe bakelite... I don't remember) scales.
It's tough, but something around 6/8 half to quarter hollow, Sheffield steel, precise point, slight smile, black horn scales and a clean, classy look.

Thanked: 23I would choose my Hart razor. It gave me my first BBS shave and continues to satisfy. Which is odd, because as a newbie trying to find what I liked the best I became convinced that I preferred round points over square or spike points. Yet my answer to this question contradicts my own template:
I thought I liked: round point, 1/4 ground, slight smile, like my LeGrelot
I choose: the Hart with a muted spike point!
The LeGrelot comes in a close second, but the Hart wins.
Inconsistent? Yes. Irrational? Possibly. Perhaps this behavior is determined by the same gene which recognizes that I don't need another razor while sending me to the classifieds here at SRP at regular intervals... or prompts me to buy a new soap or cream when I have found a great one for regular use (Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort shave cream).

Easy choice for me.
I'd keep my Novelty Cutlery 5/8. It belonged to my great grandfather and it was the first real razor I acquired.

Thanked: 102Wonderedge
I don't have a lot of expierence with different razors. However the Wonderedge I have used for over 30 years out shaves everything I have tried.
My grandfather used a Boker for over 50 years and he felt that was the best razor.
My great uncle who lived to be 95 years old was a barber for over 60 years. He said the C-Mon was the best razor he had ever used.
There is 140 years of straight razor shaving with three different opionions.
Who Knows?
