I am trying to get my wife to understand that in the longrun straight razors will save us money, but all she sees is the money going out right now. I wish she would see how much we spend on fusion blades.

I had stopped shaving about four years ago due to high cost of disposables, would just buzz clip every couple days.

I wanted a new razor for christmas and the wife said I had enough. She asked me to estimate what I have spent since sept. when I started: close to two thousand on razors, about three hundred on stones, another hundred on soaps, creams, pre and after shaves, and a seventy dollar strop. I don't see the big deal, she loves that I am finially shaving again and if it means that I will keep shaving she should be happy. I think??

RAD and HAD are grrreat addictions and I think we should not slow down at all.

Just wait until you have to tell her that you took out a second mortgage to pay for that last order of straights!

I really want a Robert Williams custom and when she saw what they cost she changed my mind real fast reminding me that we have a baby on the way. One day soon I hope to have one though. The comments and reviews about a Williams razor are just outstanding.

Aside from buying a few hones, I've managed to be pretty restrained. (I still look and think about getting more stuff, but then I find I can't justify it)

I only have 2 razors in operation - one I bought in an op shop and got honed. The other was my great grandfather's and I honed this one. Down the track I'm looking at making knives and having a go at making razors (just for fun and learning)- this also keeps me from buying more.

It is possible to save money with straights if you want to, especially if you're thinking long term. However - saving money isn't the only reason for straight shaving. For many I guess it is a kind of hobby and form of relaxation.

Enjoy - whatever path you take!

yup. I started this hobby because my beard mangles Mach 3s in two shaves. But 4 strops, 6 hones, 29 straights, 40 shaving soaps later........I'm not sure I'm saving too much!

You might not be saving any money but you are having a LOT more fun aren't you ? It isn't the shaving that is costing you more, it is the hobby of collecting. The shaving is a lot cheaper.

Is it possible to rub Rogaine on your face to make your beard grow faster so you shave more often therefore making the expense of this "hobby" worth the investment? I'm getting into straights because I live in the Philippines and after 2 years of using crappy dbl edge safety razor blades my razor broke and I had to buy a disposable razor again... UGH! Nothing like a cheap razor to remind you why you stopped using them to begin with.

Is there any chance that you could cut the razor up and throw away all but the redskin symbol, then use it as an inlay in a custom razor?
