Thanked: 0New Dovo Razor chipped - pix - advice?
Hello everyone. I just got back in the States where I can actually deal with my chipped dovo razor. It was brand new, on it's third shave, when a two tiny nicks appeared about .5cm from the top of the blade while stropping. This left a gash in the strop that would have otherwise been in the face! The knick is not very deep (very difficult to capture in pictures) and is completely bizarre since the knife was not dropped or bumped into anything. Does this look like something that could be honed out? Thanks!

That could be honed out I reckon. Theres no cracking appearing by the looks of things, so it should be salvagable.
You'll need to go right down to 1k, or maybe even lower (220 or 500) to get that out. See how quickly the 1k removes the chip. If it gets it out pretty fast then stick with it, but if its taking ages you may need to drop down to a 500 or even 220 grit. Or spend the next 18 months on the hone...!
Only once you have fully removed the chip, move up to the 1k and reset the bevel. Make sure you can shave arm hair all along the blade at this point before you move onto the 4k sharpener and higher grits.
If you're not sure of your honing ability, or dont have hones, then send it out to a honemeister to repair.
Good luck!

+1. It certainly looks savable. If you're not sure of your abilities send it to someone who is.

Thanked: 199Unfortunate that it happened so soon after you got it
And as stated above, yes this will hone out very easily, and should be good as new.
It could possible have been a very thin spot on the edge that got knocked free while stropping. I had a couple razors that I had that problem with as well.

If I remember correctly my Black Star ended up with a chip on the cutting edge and I never dropped it or hit it or mistreated it in anyway because it was the first and for a while the only one I had. I took it out with a 12k because it was the only thing at the time. So that leads to this question can or will a strop cause a chip in the blade if you're stropping the right way.

You've already got the advice you were looking for, but if you haven't already, read through some of the entries in the Wiki. Shaving with and maintaining a straight isn't rocket science, but it does take skills that need to be learned and that's what makes it fun. Welcome to SRP!

The detail of the chip makes me wonder what sharpening stone last
saw this blade. The diagonal scratches do not look like factory or
honing marks. I could be wrong.
It does look small enough to be easy to deal with using the right tools.

I am wondering if this is a Dovo thing? I bought a brand new one a few months back and noticed a small chip in almost exactly the same place. I was able to hone it out on a 3000k and everything seems fine since. I'd be interested to hear if other Dovo owners have found this?
