You might look at the Dovo Jubilaum 3/8 Anniversary razor. It's overall about a fourth smaller than a traditional straight. A little hard to find. RoyalShave.com has them, as does Amazon (through Royalshave).
Here's a couple pics of mine; the top is a typical 5/8 standard straight so you can compare the overall size:

Thanked: 2That dovo looks okay, but I see plenty of problems still.
I don't like the idea of the shavette, on a one year hike it would be no better than a gilette in my eyes, Regardless of how well it shaves, It's just not what I am after.

I use an old Antoni Tadross when I travel, wether in the civilized world or elsewhere. I also take a favorite soap, a cheap tweezerman brush, an old strop and a barber hone. Its all good. If rust were a concern take a small bottle of any decent oil or get a stainless blade.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

If you can be more specific about the "problems" with the little Dovo, you may get better input.
I wonder why you don't just use a DE? I can get a totally acceptable WTG shave with a DE and water only. Then your kit is as small as the smallest DE you can find, and they come quite small.

I was curious about what the problems were with the little Dovo too--it's a bit longer than 3" OAL, but it's the smallest functional straight razor I've found except the Livi that costs $300! Any straight will require also some kind of strop.
Indeed, he should get the Merkur Travel DE razor. Breaks down into a little pouch smaller than a pack of cigarettes that can hold a little pack of blades too.

Or maybe shop for one of those old "corn razors" or even something from the "Coochie Razor Project?" those were small too. I'm not trying to be cute here!

Thanked: 2I just googled his name and came up with a few pictures, none of them looked small so not sure which blade you are talking about..
And I cannot be specific at this time as to the problems I see without a mod jumping on me. sorry
I hope I can later, it's exciting

i think when it's all said and done.. you couldn't go wrong with this merkur travel DE..
Merkur Travel Safety Razor with Bar
i know people can get shaves just as close as a straight with proper technique.. unless you are hellbent on sticking with straights for travel.. i really think this would be the way to go..

Thanked: 2If there were time stamps on here you would see that I was typing as you were posting.
My apologies for not back reading to check if anything had been written in the time it took me to type out a response.
You made a brief mention to a livi initially, For someone not well versed, it takes a bit of time to find things when this forum uses so many abbreviations, Ti, de, xtg, atg... They are not always obvious to us beginners...
You will notice also I said nearly a perfect size, but regardless
It was a worthy recommendation, it is close to what I would be looking for if I had limited time to choosse.Last edited by 8thsinner; 08-03-2010 at 11:36 PM.
