Default Taking care of your razors

What do you use on your razors to prevent rust? How frequently do you apply it? I have not had much luck preventing rust on razors

I think most folks (me included) apply a thin film of oil on the blade AFTER it's dry. Many use mineral oil; others prefer camellia oil. I don't think olive, canola or any of the vegetable oils would be the way to go. You might also do a search for posts by Utopian. He uses a solution of mineral oil in isopropyl alcohol that he swears by. I haven't tried this yet, but probably will soon. Hope this helps!

Yes, Mineral oil, (Wahl's clipper oil) in beauty supply places and Wal Mart, Target, or Camellia oil are the most popular. I have many, many razors, and the one's I'm not using presently have a thin coating of Camellia oil. The razors out in rotation, usually 7-9 at a time get wiped down with a Silicone treated cloth. A quick wipe or two after it's dry, and it's good to go. It seemed a waste to me to wipe down a blade with oil, only to wipe it off again in a few days...

The Silicone treated cloth, like the one's you use on guns are great for everyday protection...I live in Florida, and have never had any problems with rust....

I use sterol and it works great. Are you sure rust is the problem. Often times you can get stains from the water that might look similar to rust but isn't.

5 tiny drops of mineral oil on each side and then wipe with TP. After that, one more drop in the pivot and it's ready to go to sleep.

I keep my razors out of the bathroom (shave den) unless I'm using them, make sure they are dry after use and before closing, put a light coat of oil (I use break free gun oil or rem oil) on if they are going to sit. Wipe off oil before stropping.

    Post Rust Prevention

After my shave, I wipe my razor as dry as I can, first with a regular towel then more with some TP (not too sure of that's necessary, but it's a tip I picked up from one of the threads here I think. Plus it makes my mind feel better). Then, I leave it open for about an hour or two in my bedroom to let it air dry (especially important between the scales). After I'm confident it's totally dry, or at least as dry as it's gonna get, I put a couple drops of camellia oil on it. Hopefully this helps, and best of luck battling rust

    Cool

Yes, the pharmacy one is best because you can injest it.

    jbcohen,

For daily use - Sentry Solutions TufGlide - leaves a dry film of protectant. Does not have to be wiped off before stropping, which is a bonus

    For intermediate storage - Ballistol.

For long term storage - RIG grease.

    Have fun !

    regards

    Russ
