Thread: TI Crownwing Opinions Wanted

I have the original Silverwing and if I am not mistaken the steel is different from the newer versions. It shaves like a wedge. The Crownwing feels very different. To me it feels like a part hollow.

IMHO, I think that the steel for both of them is the same. For me, the CRW shape, with a thinner blade, thicker spine and shorter length is what makes the difference between the original silver wing and the present product. I could be wrong, but as I reread the review by Ignatz, I don't believe Thiers changed steel. They postively changed design.

BanjoTom has the right of it.
The Grelot Crown Silverwing uses exactly the same steel mix (Carbonsong 153) as the original Silverwing.
However, the blade of the Grelot Crown Silverwing starts off with a different profile (by virtue of a new forging die) which is followed up by a different grind, not to mention the spine decoration and laser engraved serial numbering.

I don't know what I'm talking about here, but I'm assuming, that you could take a half dozen of any model TI, or any other brand for that matter, and even using the same steel, grind and everything, they would be slightly different ? I mean to hone, to shave with ..... am I way off base here ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I gave my CRW 20 laps on a 12K just to freshen the edge. I have never seen a razor that literally was sucked into the stone. But this one was. I have 2 other TIs with the new steel and they don't act the way this blade does. Maybe I got lucky, I don't know. But, for me, I am a very happy owner.

I also remember talk about how it was slightly different. I seem to remember that people were told that it was hardened a little harder than the general c135 razors. IIRC they were saying that the regular c135's had a 62 -ish and the Silverwing had 65 -ish. That would be one reason for the less hollow feel.Last edited by ZethLent; 03-03-2011 at 05:01 AM.

For what its worth,I got a Silverwing French point for Christmas and it shaves like a dream,I believe its the newer steel as it came with a paper saying something about its hardness...anyway I like it.

Since there still seems to be a wee bit of confusion, I would like to politely point out that all Silverwing razors produced by TI up to this point in time have used the same steel.
Yes, the steel in the TI razors was changed. The older mix had a carbon content of 1.2% which was upped to a carbon content of 1.35%, this newer steel mix being designated as Carbonsong 135.
However, the Silverwing name for these razors did not exist prior to that increase in carbon content. At the time the steel mix was improved the forging die was altered (extra banding on the tang and a longer tail) to differentiate it from earlier razors of similar shape which used the older steel. Only after these changes to the steel and the die occured were the first limited edition Silverwing razors produced.

Hmm very confusing now. I don't know so I'm no authority but some of the previous posts here on the subject refer to someone who spoke to some bigwig at TI who supposedly told them there were changes made after the initial Silverwings came out. I know my silverwing has a totally different feel than my crownwing beyond what the size and grind difference would produce. I haven't messed with the crownwing honing wise yet but the silverwing was a real bear to dial in.
