    Default question about tape

Some videos show people honing and putting tape on the spin of the razor, are they protecting the spin from wear? Or are they building up the spin to compensate for the wear from honing that has already taken place? And does the tape plug up the pores of the stone?

    Default OK................then

How do you figure out the number of tape strips you need to add to compensate for the wear on the spin? And how would you best remove the tape residue from the stone? And I'M WONDERING IF THERE IS A process to build the spine back up that doesn't look like a bar was glued on? I'm not thinking of doing it myself, but before I start bothering the restorers it would be nice to know if it can be done with in a reasonable price range. Are would it be better to just buy a new razor and just use this one for show and tell ..............JR

And to add a further question to this scenario: If the spine has been taped for honing, is it then necessary to tape the spine to get the maximum benefit from stropping as well? It seems to me that this would be so, but I wanted to ask the experts.

No, there is more than enough give in strops,,, we are talking about 1/2 of 1 degree of change per layer of average electrical tape.. On a surface that is most likely 1/32 of an inch or very freaking small

IF I were using a balsa strop with paste I might think about leaving the tape on ... But I don't, so I won't, hehehe

Not that I'm aware of. Razors and other sharp instruments are made by removing steel from a bar because it's far easier and cheaper to do it this way.
If there's enough steel you can regrind the razor and make the worn out flats on the spine look better, but that's just a cosmetic fix.
I don't know what you consider 'reasonable' price, but buying a new razor is going to be cheaper than a good restoration on almost anything. The only reason to restore razors is if they are something special, there isn't much work to do, or the restorer's time and effort are worth almost nothing.

Nicely done Glen. I think we went less than a month with the same question.

I think tape is an advanced honing concept.
