What does the end look like between the scales ? Could it have been broken off ? From the grind of the blade it appears to be of modern origin.

Jimmy it is perfect rounded to match the length of the handle(thickness of it.) tail is not coming out when you close or open or half open the blade?

If it is perfectly rounded I would believe it was made that way, if it had been broken there would be rough metal showing. I am not trying to contradict Jimmy but the grind design does go back aways, I have seen it on stubtails, but this has no tail. If the whole blade is gold washed I have no idea how to clean it and save the gold.

Looks French to me. Does a rounded tail poke out when it's shut? Whatever, that MOP is beautiful.

I just watched a vid of a guy showing off his collection and he stated that the early 1800 and 1700 razors did not have the tang/monkey tail. He had at least two in his display case that looked similar to yours but not gold washed.

I wonder if this isn't a display piece never meant to be used (since I can't see honing it without thrashing the gold).

I'll see if I can dig up that vid...for all I know it might be some one on SRP.

    Edit: Found the vid...here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52RV6AXcN6c
Start paying attention around 3:10 in. Might not be what yours are, this guy might not know his stuff, but it's the only time I've seen a tang-less razor before.

I think it could be a custom job for some wealthy man who did'nt like the tails.

    Default nice?

i was at the gunshow this past weekend and saw something very similar to this one.the crest on the other one and the bolster were a little different but had the same gold tone on MoP scales.there was pinwork around the crest.when i asked about it he said he wanted 1800.00 for it,and proceeded to tell me that it was real gold.the one you have looks like it might be 18k,nice or not...from the pics it looks nice to me.

+1 I'm with Jimmy on this one. It looks like the grind of the razor is later than the style of the scales and that the razor was modified to work with the scales. The tail might have been ground off and properly finished to not leave a trace. The scales are beautiful! It would be great to get a blade from the era of the scales and match the two up but it is also nice as it is. Someone must have liked the razor enough to have it put into those scales. There's always a chance that this was made this way, an older style scales with a more modern blade geometry.

I think the razor was made like that and it is French.

I have a similar one in this thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...-razors-2.html
