RUST??
If you had a box of unopened vintage razors would an x-ray pick up if there were any rust on the blades, or just if they had become swiss cheese?

Rust no.
Serious swiss cheese action sure.
But if I was a betting man the x-ray will not
show anything because the rust still contains the
same amount of iron that it did before oxidation.
If you have a box of new unopened vintage razors
I see four options:
Open and use them
Leave them unopened
Open and inspect
Send half of them to me for a 40 year evaluation.
New still In Box can demand a premium.
If you do open them use gloves and also
apply a light oil/ protctant so you do not add fingerprints.

You can most certainly find out, without opening the boxes, but it'll cost you many times the value of the razors themselves. You have to do some rather specialized spectroscopy, and both the machines and the know-how are very expensive.

I'm not an expert by any means but I also think when making your decision, the media of the sale might factor in. If you're selling on ebay, it may be difficult to convince a buyer but in person it could be different. Personally, I would have no problem if the box was opened simply for verification but I assume there are others who think much differently.
My second thought is that if you open them yourself and find rust, it's on you. If you sell them unopened, I would then say the buyer must deal with any imperfections.
Lastly, from your OP - it isn't exactly specified that you plan to sell these razors so this post is just speculation

Sell?? I had to laugh I keep telling the wife I will sell some of the extra razors I have, so far I have sold 2 one private sale and one on ebay, and given 2 away. I find it hard to sell any of the razors even ones I have multiple multiples of. Heck I was so nervious about the private sale to a member I sent the guy two of the same razor so he could look at both and decide which he liked better.
If they are rusted I will not be out that much money, and the place I got them said they would refund half of the money if opened or all if unopened. That was why I asked about X-rays and rust.Last edited by Dllandry; 05-27-2011 at 01:01 PM.

I think an MRI or CAT scan would show the detail.

Thanked: 3795If you think about it, I'm pretty sure you'll figure out why an MRI would be a bad idea.

Box full of razors...
A box full of razors in an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner would be priceless...
A bunch of sharp metal + powerful magnetic fields = AWESOME!
Sounds like PPV event waiting to happen...

Yeah slamming into the machine when powered up would not be good for the razors lol
