Carl, the way I shave with the double edge is this: Every two strokes, or three, I rinse the razor under the faucet, and then flip it in my hand to use the other side of the blade. The pattern is: two strokes, rinse, flip; two strokes, rinse, flip; two strokes, rinse, flip. This pattern goes on throughout my Hollywood face. Or you can do it the way my good friend MickR suggests by using one edge for one side of your face and another for the opposite side. You'll develop your own pattern.

Keep your wrist locked; beware of the razor angle; and like the straight razor no pressure at all. The Muhle R89 you have on the way has ample weight, which is all you need. Don't shave over the same spot excessively or you'll have the pleasure of razor burn. Once over the same spot and move on, because you can get what you missed on the next pass. Shave in passes, as with the straight razor.

I change blades every three shaves. After the shave I take the blade out, rinse it, gently pat it dry, and wrap it in its original paper wrapper, and put it away safely among the rest of the blades. Then I rinse and dry the razor and put it away. Some gentlemen don't remove the blade from the razor until time to change blades. The choice is yours.

You know I'm starting to become interested in DE too, for use at work, can't take straights to the rig, so was wondering if i might get away with a DE. Of course if i do that i'll loose my post work treat of getting to take 2-3 weeks growth off with a wedge

I'll give both methods a trial. Interesting stuff. And more interesting that one can actually have a conversation this detailed about shaving. I was thinking about storing it on my desk in the bedroom in pieces on a barber's towel do it dried really well. I actually never thought about the blade. This'll be another whole facet to the 'proper' wet shaving thing.

I shaved with a Gillette "Sticky" that I bought new in 1975. I shaved with this until, around 2003 when I switched to a Mach 3. I just used to throw it into my washbag still wet. scrape off the dried soap once every few years, never gave it a thought. Wouldn't dream of doing that with a Razor now.

I use my DEs during the week and my straights on the weekends. They are a little faster and shave just as close. Once you get the hang of it you will love them. Any advice Obie gives I would follow. I have not seen a word he has posted I would disagree with.

Well, I got the Mühle R 89 today. I haven't shaved with it yet; but it's a marvel of engineering and design, that much is certain. My son keeps teasing me and telling me it's a disposable and I should just write BIC on it; he's heard me denigrate every other shaving system other than straights for about 115 days...

And your smartarse son has been shaving with a cut-throat for how long exactly???!

No, this is my LITTLE son! 13. All 13 year olds are smartarses but not all smartarses are 13...
