Good Day - Bad Day

Yesterday started off as a good day, two new Mastro Livi razors, including the 2016 Club razor, had arrived and I went and picked them up from the local FedEx office as I did not want to wait until after the weekend - which most, if not all of you will probably understand.

In the evening I went to strop my razors for the coming week, which I intend to make a "Livi week".

The second Grifetto I started stropping left a minuscule scratch on the strop and as I took a closer look, I noticed that the edge had a small nick.
I have no recollection of ever nicking the blade, am not even sure whether I made that "contribution" or whether it happened when the bedroom was cleaned, but I clearly had to take some metal off and create a new bevel - something I had hoped to put off as long as I could, as I wanted to enjoy the original Livi bevel as long as possible.

Mastro Livi edges differ from most edges that I have seen, in so far as they appear to be fairly narrow - much narrower than the typical edge that I put on or recall from most new razors.

It also meant that this morning I wasn't able to enjoy one of the new Livis, as I wanted to find out first whether the new edge came close to the original one.

As material needed to be taken off, I started with the 1000 grit Naniwa, which I rarely ever use, and then progressed through 5000, 8000, 12000 Naniwas, the 20000 Gokumyo, followed by the Mastro Livi chromium and then leather strop and ultimately some hand stropping.

It took me some time, but I am glad to report that this morning's shave was as good as ever.

While it was not by choice, it demonstrated to me that Mastro Livi razors are not that difficult to hone.

That's the thing about mastro livi razors they have what I would call Invisable tiny even bevels, which proves even the grind is,. the one thing I leant from mastro is not to use a 1 k hone if possible , I rarely go lower than 3 k hone, this is what mastro livi highly recommends.

I agree as far as setting bevel is concerned, but when the task at hand is removing material to eliminate a nick in the edge, a 1000 grit hone does have its uses.

Please could you explain the benefits of using the 3000 grit for bevel setting?

Mastro Livi recommends not to use a 1000 grit stone for setting bevels and (if I remember correctly) uses himself a 3000 grit stone for this task.

It is my understanding that coarser stones increase the risk of microchipping the edge.
