I am not a collector, but a user of striaghts, so paying that kind of $$ for a 5/8 razor is not appealing to me, and when it comes down to it, that's all it is, a razor. I had a pristine 6/8 Goldedge that I sold recently as I was not really impressed with it as a shaver, it was just too noisy for me. But that's just me, everybody is different. I also had a 5/8 Vesuvius that I recently sold for the same reason. They did their job and shaved well, but I like heavier grinds. I hope whoever bought that Wonderedge get's some good value out of it.

Now I have to ask the same question about these...

The prices on DDs have been high for some years now and with all the increasing demand for straights they are only going in one direction. You probably have to go back around 10 years or more to see really lower prices on them.
It has nothing to do with any intrinsic worth. As long as there is demand the price will only increase. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

That's $225 per duck!
Seriously, the pool gets smaller every time someone leaves one wet, wears one out, drops one, lets the scales rot, tries to "restore" one, learns to hone on one, etc etc.One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

Classicedge.ca had a NOS Dubl Duck Goldedge a couple if weeks ago. It sold for $899.00. It had the factory edge still on it. Would have loved to buy it, but that is a lot for a razor that I probably would display and not use.

Together they make one complete GE Duck.. plus spare parts
Myself I would be more concerned with how "Yellow" the scales are, WE and GE scales start out White, they Yellow as the Catalin ages and begins to deteriorate, by the time they get to that really Dark Gold color things are not looking good..

I'm not a collector. For me straight razors are still kind of things they once were made to be: cheap or moderately priced everyday shaving things for everyman. Sort of a toothbrush or work knife.
Current prices tell only that straight razor shaving has become sort of a hype. Fashion. And as soon someone tells here (or any other shaving related site) about the superiority about this or that brand the prices will skyrocket. Of course it's a question of supply and demand as well.
I haven't bought razors for years but when i did, DD's and many other famous brands were usually about USD 30-40 or less. DD's are surely great shavers but not that good. Basically i think there are so many not-so-famous brands or even nameless ones to give a shave as good. It's about honing and shaving techniques as well.
If i were to buy razors now, i would look from internet auction sites other than English language. Razors (as many other hype things) are still modestly prices. From one of my domestic sites you can find good Swedish/Finnish/German/Russian razors for 5-10 €.Last edited by Sailor; 04-23-2013 at 06:12 PM.
