For backing I just used a piece of scrap 2X6 sitting on my workbench. the 2X6 is soft enough not to damage the edge of the punch once it cuts through the material.

I cut about a 2" long section of 1" I.D. pipe. I used my bench grinder followed by a file to sharpen a chisel edge around the outside circumference of one end.
A good whack on the unsharpened end...
