Default Feather ASD2 vs FrankenRazor PP1489

Today the direct comparison (ShaveBattle) Feather ASD2 vs PP1489 (franken razor) begins.
    https://sharprazorpalace.com/shave-d...ml#post1882172

To benefit the challenger, even if I do not like them, today I used Feather Hi-Stainless blades as suggested.
    Feather AS-D2 Razor
Thanks mainly to this change, Feather has improved its usual efficiency.
Instead my darling had difficulty managing the first shaving, renowned for aggressiveness, of this blade.

However, the control differential has plagued both competitors.
Feather uses this blade better, but geometry imposes a less spontaneous mechanic.
The PP1489 suffers from the (first???) aggressive shaving, and required more attention than usual.
The end result, however, was identical: complete ritual in complete satisfaction (BBS3plus).
So, for the first day of this tournament in the style medieval tenzone ... I would definitely say ex aequo.

Tomorrow is replicated, but with other blades just as efficient ... but more balanced.
    Stay tuned ...

Default Feather ASD2 vs FrankenRazor PP1489

Today, comparison in the Italian style between Feather ASD2 and Frankenrazor PP1489.

To avoid problems I used one of my most precious blades.
In fact the result was (unexpectedly) perfect: BBS6plus.
Yes, because confident in my instruments the comparison has been carried out with doubling of every single step.
First the Feather, then the PP1489 ... with the classic ritual.

In the end I found that Feather is manageable, albeit less and less intuitive.
And the PP1489 in addition to being more balanced, is also more powerful.
In fact at every pass, the second identical passage with my sample has still been shaved.

    Now I don't know if tomorrow I'll have the chance. : D: D: D
But I already have a litmus test to check this incredible result.

Trying to find my favorite among the two champions of efficiency (Feather ASD2 vs Edwin Jagger DE89), two new chimeras are born.

FrankenRazor Mister Piuma: Feather ASD2 / Maggard Razors "MR14" Alluminium Handle
FrankenRazor Eddy ASD2: Edwin Jagger DE89 / Feather ASD2 Stainless Steel Handle

As already happened in the direct comparison with PP1489, also for this meeting the challengers clash to the Italian style.
The pass was doubled (first Mister Piuma, then Eddy ASD2), with a complete cycle of three passes and adjustments.

Now I clearly understand how much a handle best suited to my preferences affects the quality of my shaving.
More control, more comfort, more efficiency.
Thanks to this, the Feather ASD2 regains ground ... but still a hair EJ geometry is more efficient.
Especially for the accumulated experience, the convenience and intuitiveness of the best angle made the difference.
Indeed, again at each pass EJ exceeds in depth and speed. And again a BBS6plus ... but less than the other, by a hair.
As we say in Italy... "The game is on the handle".

To definitely have the quadrature of the circle, I only held my favorite handle by rotating the heads.
Since on the other days the two direct confrontations left me a hole in a shaving day, I changed my method.
All three passes with Mister Piuma, and the last pass XTGR doubled with PP1489:
    PP1489 | Edwin Jagger DE89 / Maggard Razors MR14 / Feather ASD2 | Mister Piuma

Given the unprecedented (for me) approach, I used all the software to increase protection.
With results I would say magnificent, given the excellent characteristics of these Rose products ... which is also why the name Queen of flowers.

As before, the handle makes all the two heads to the maximum.
After the normal triple cycle with Feather, I could have sworn I had already achieved a good BBS3.
However at the passage of EJ also the last fraction of a millimeter (impalpable) was eliminated, reaching an absolutely perfect BBS4.
Comparable almost to what I achieve with the Gillette Fusion ProGlide with Power FlexBall handle in three passes.
In fact, after giving time to aftershave treatments to do their work, a paper did not resonate on the skin: perfectly smooth.

This is why PP1489 remains my golden standard.

The Gillettes are fine razors, well made, and good shavers. I have had many and passed them on. For one thing, I prefer razors that cover the blade tabs. I just don’t like exposed blade tabs, whether on a vintage razor or new production.

The Feather shave head covers the entire blade. That is a big plus for me. Now, the Feather is a mild shaver, with a blade gap around 0. 48 or 49mm. I’m not sure.

Yet, I can get a good shave with the Feather. A comfortable shave, I might add. No, I don’t get the closest shave possible. I do get a comfortable shave using Feather blades corked. I have been at this for a long time and my motto has been: comfort over perfect.

The trick with the Feather for a good shave is this: Keep the angle around 45 degrees, use short and buffing strokes, throughout the shave, especially on the upper lip and chin, and keep the pressure light.

For me, Feather blades work beautifully in the Feather razor. I cork them, as I noted, and use them for no more than two shaves. Sometimes just one shave. With any blade, I use a fresh blade per shave, maximum two shaves.

Finally, the razor is just sweet to hold. The weight and balance are perfect for me. Of course, built quality and tolerance are excellent. It’s a good looking razor.

It takes time to learn everything about the Feather. My suggestion is to take your time and give the razor a chance. It will serve you well.

I've found the Feather DS 2 to be a mild razor. It gives a good comfortable shave and it's construction and looks and ergonomics are top notch. Unfortunately there are just other razors out there giving a superior shave.

I had an AS D1 that was my favorite DE, before I started using straights. The only thing that I didn't care for was the slim handle, as I have very large hands. I have a medium beard and sensitive skin, and tended to prefer DE's on the mild side and a very sharp blade, such a Feather. When I fell in love with straights, I gave it to my son when he became interested in using something other than a cart. However, I gave it to him as I wanted to give him one of the best razors. This was before there were many other DE's or SE's available in stainless. Now I have a couple of SE's, one that I purchased from Obie, and another recommended by him, that I use when I'm rushing out in the morning, but I would also be using my D1 if I still had that lovely razor.

Polished Feather, eh? I have never seen one. As for the Feather AS-D2, I still have mine and use it from time to time. There are more efficient razors out there, yes, but the Feather has its own level of comfort and efficiency. It is a handsome razor and feels just right in the hands.

My safety razor of choice these days is the Timeless Ti68, both SB and OC, and it is magical. But I still keep some room for the Feather.
