Thanks! The Birch Hill site looks promising.

One of my hobbies is carving stones, and my favorite stone for carving is soapstone. Soapstone is composed largely of talc, and one of the issues for soapstone carving is the question of breathing in talc dust.

Basically, the stuff accumulates in your lungs. It's like asbestos or coal dust in that regard. The (FDA) considers non-asbestiform talc, that is talc which does not contain asbestiform amphibole fibers, to be "Generall Recognized As Safe" for use in cosmetics. In 1993, a US National Toxicology Program report found that cosmetic grade talc caused tumours in animals, even though it contained no asbestos-like fibres. Scientists have been aware of the toxicity of talc since the late 1960s, and in 1971 researchers found particles of talc embedded in 75 percent of the ovarian tumors studied.

Talc-free baby powder is cornstarch and perfume. If you don't want to smell like a baby, you could just buy cornstarch in the baking aisle at the grocery store. If you want something fancier, Crabtree & Evelyn have talc-free body powders in a number of non-baby fragrances. (A quick peek at the Caswell-Massey catalog finds only Talc in their various scents.)

Thanks for the info. I did some researching and many reputable websites confirmed it. I just canceled an order for talc powder and I am going to order talc-free powder.

So is no-one is impressed with the silk powder idea then?

Unscented talc, damaged lungs, in another forum we have people talking about rubbing hair conditioner into their face, and noone with a shiny face wants to try silk powder???

My girlfriend used to like you lot. Not any more.
