Thanked: 0First thing I thought of: those old, Old El Paso salsa commericals... New York City! Boys better get the rope.
I have used electrics before but they were unremarkable.

Thanked: 235My father in law uses an electric. He also stands about two meters away from the mirror. But because he is asian he can only grow about two hairs anyway.

I have one of the most expensive Phillips models out there, and it does shave your face, but the way it does it isn't very great or close. You really have to work it to get a close shave, and it does give quite a lot of irritation, not like razor burn in terms of pain, more like really working some body-scrub into your face. I rarely use it, but I've noticed that as your beard gets coarser the shave is less uncomfortable since it actually starts cutting instead of pulling out the hairs (which is what gives you that redness). My father has used the same electric for several decades, and it's still going strong and he gets a good shave out of it. I think they are a better alternative than disposables and cartridges, but not better than DE's or straights. They are damn nifty for travel though, just remember to shave before you shower, the hairpulling gets worse if your beard is softened by water.
The beard trimmer on the back of it is excellent though, really good for trimming my beard and other hairy parts...Last edited by Stuggi; 01-17-2009 at 05:55 PM.

Thanked: 1903I used to, because cartridge razors would give me razor burn. But I do have a very nice, and deep, scar on my right jaw. 6(!) ingrown hairs, right next to each other. Courtesy of Braun electric razors. Took almost three months to heal off. Switched to DE afterwards, then to straights.
They say you should not look back in anger, but if I should ever meet a Braun engineer in a dark alley, CNN will have news for you.

I had one years ago, it was a complete waste of money chucked it in the bin.
Funny thing is I had pretty much given up shaving, over the years Ive used my dads old DE's before they were fashionable and the regular triple blade things but for the last few Ive gone with stubble like a bum and a hair clipper on my face once a week, that suited me fine, then I started with straights around Christmas, the fascination for me was more with the blade than with the shave but theres no point having the blades if you cant use them. So now Im permanently looking forward to my next shave, Im still not mad about being clean shaven but I enjoy the process of shaving with a straight and all the other stuff that goes with it. Even my other half bizarely says she likes me better with stubble. So Im stuffed really, have to get used to looking respectable again. Ive found that I cant even grow a decent length of stubble between straight shaves because now that my face is used to being smooth again even just 2-3 days growth itches like hell and I have to get it off!

Thanked: 278I have a trusty old Braun rechargeable that I kept for emergencies. A couple of months ago I thought it would be a good idea to track down some new blades and foils for it. I found some online, but they weren't exactly cheap. So I considered buying a new electric shaver, maybe one of those self-cleaning jobbies with built in diagnostic computer and fancy display. Electrics last me years (I don't use them often) so it's worth my getting a good one.
But then I started looking at the prices. Up to £250!? (That's nearly $370 now) Hang on, that's some serious money for something that does such a poor job. So I started googling around, and discovered places like SRP and B&B. Soon I worked out that for that £250 I could get a DE razor, a straight, badger brush and a ton of all the other stuff you need for beyond-cartridge wet shaving, so that's what I bought. I've had a lot of fun learning about the straight, and I now enjoy shaving which was never true before (always loved being clean shaved, but never liked the process of getting there.)
I still have that electric. I doubt I will use it again. Here's the thing: 24 hours after wet shaving any stubble is STILL less than I have immediately after an electric shave. So when will the electric prove itself useful? Never, really.

Thanked: 16I have an electric self cleaner it has not been used in years. I used to really enjoy it on my face but it gave some irritation if I tried to get a close shave on the neck. The cleaning station clogged itself multiple times and those foils are expensive and hard to track down. However I have yet to find a better way to shave while running on a train If I return to that lifestyle I might have to track down a new foil for it.

Braun
Bought a new Braun in May. used it steadily until November.
Had a problem
I had two major abdominal surgerys this year, the first being an emergency and the only way for me to shave was for my wife to shave me... at first... with the electric...
I remember sitting on the hospital bed listening to the humming of the razor while feeling the pulling and tearing on my face.
The shaves I got were poor.. even some bleeding as it cut off ingrown bumps developed from the last shave...
I have been a DE guys previously and had a goatee.. now with an electric it was like another nail in the...
Now, since November I have found some of my uncles old straights and have taught myself to use and maintain them through the help of this and other forum boards.
Shaving has once again regained its appeal (even more so now with the straights) and it is truely one of lifes pleasures
no more Braun for me.... God willin!
so I guess an electric DOES have a place...

Sure, lots of people use electric razors. But they are the folks who were bad in a past life and God is still punishing them.
