In reading the barber's manual I found out that most men's whiskers change direction on the neck below the jaw line. That means that you would reverse direction of shaving on the neck. That's what the manual teaches.

Myth no. 2 -- don't shave against the grain. You'll never have a really close shave unless you do.
    I agree.

The first pass should always be down the grain. That way, on your second pass, which, logically to me at least should be against the grain where possible, you should get the closest possible shave.

That is my experience at least...

Whole head is shaved against the grain, no trouble whatsoever. No pre- nor aftercare, just lather and dry.

Oh, and which Royal Family might that be? There is nothing under testimonials nor on the whole site on this. This either means the statement was false or she hasn't done a good job?

Reason enough for me to stay clear from such a place
Its accually a quite nice place. I have let her (Lauren) shave my face a few times with great results. Her ideas of retraining hair are a bit suspicious but her technique is much nicer than mine. I guess that is why they charge $40. I have followed thier advice (not against the grain) for about 6 weeks now and I can DEFINATELY tell a difference in the amount of ingrowns and general discomfort while shaving. I most certainly cant get quite as close though.

That's the tradeoff. But you don't have to make it. Eventually, you would find the way to shave close and comfortably. It's just a matter of time.
