I wonder how the powers that be would react to a shavette as carry-on? There would be no blade, and you could pick up blades at a local beauty/barber supply.

Yeah, gotta admit I'd check it in, posting it forward seems even more complicated. Obviously you should do what you wish though.

re: traveling
I have to think about what I am going to do....
I can't see checking a bag over a shaving razor. However, I do see the airlines' point of view.
I might just bring my electric - I really hate that thing!

Traveling
Gentlemen,
I must agree with everyone else: checking the bag with the straight razor is the only way that gorgeous straight is getting on the plane. I have done this many times, even if could have managed with only a carry-on. Now it even costs money to check that first bag. Nothing is sacred anymore.
So there you have it: reality.
Regards,
Obie

A good rule of thumb for flying ...
If it is remotely sharp or could be considered sharp, check it.
DE Blades? I am not an expert on the rules in the US by any stretch but I would think these generally wouldn't be allowed on as carry on luggage unless it is your only bag and the blade is loaded in the razor. You might get away with it. The worst they will do is confiscate the razor.
Another good rule for flying:
Flying with valuables is a risk.
Some items I have traveled with sucessfully like this. I check the sharps and pocket the valuables. This way, the only time I am seperated from my valuables is during the metal detection.

If I absolutely have to travel without a straight (ugh!) I use a DE, and do as the poster above said, the blade is loaded in the Razor. I have probably done this 30 times in the past 5 years, and never once had it questioned. Now, that is not to say that it might not be questioned...as a good friend had to beg to see a supervisor about bringing her EPI-PEN on a plane due to severe allergies. I'm pretty sure that the epi-pen is specificially mentioned as a permitted item!
Now, we have a kid, and travelling with her means there is always a checked bag. So there is always room for my kit.
