Thanked: 0pre-shave routine
Well, everyone says that the pre-shave routine is as important as the razor itself and I believe it. But the Beginner's FAQ has little to say on the subject.
Me, I wash my face in the shower using a mild cleanser, and then lather up and shave as soon as I'm out of the shower and toweled off. I'm sure that there's plenty of room for improvement and I'd love to hear what others do.
So, what's your routine? Maybe if we get enough responses to this, we can add a section to the beginner's FAQ.

Thanked: 4942I do what you do except for days when I have extra time. On those days, I lather up and then put a hot handtowel which has been soaked in steamy hot water and squeezed to get out excess moisture, on my face. I let it sit there for a minute or two and then wipe off the lather and repeat. Then I wipe off and re-lather one more time and then shave.......Soooooo nice. Feels like I'm in the barber shop and very relaxing. Lynn

Thanked: 4Dave: Try putting some moisturizer on your face a few minutes before you shower. It makes a huge difference in my beard, with little change in routine.

You can also try a little hair conditioner on your beard. That will make the beard a little softer & easier to cut.
Lathering right after the shower is great. Hot towels are really nice if you have the time. I do a hot towel for a minute or so between the first & second pass.
I've also found that if I let the lather sit on my face for a minute or two, then reapply more lather to freshen it up, that my shave tends to be a little better.

My little ritual is as follows:
Hot shower
As soon as I towel off, get hot water in sink cranking and apply shave cream.
Brush hair and then strop.
More water, cream and then Shave.

Thanked: 0Tried the moisturizer before showering this morning. It really did seem to help, but I was also 3 days out from my last shave. The irritation usually crops up on consecutive days. We'll see if it's better tomorrow also.
