Bump. I've been looking for this thread for some time as I forgot to subscribe to it last time I ran across it. It would be nice if we could have another map like the one above in the same format as our straight razor member location map.
Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

I have yet to get a closer shave as my barber, Lou (Lou's Barber Shop, Clinton, CT) gives. And he sells Pinaud, too. Here, he is cutting my boy's hair a couple of years ago.

Thanked: 586This is perfect timing! I am recovering from surgery and not allowed to do much oof anyting but take alot of percoset and goof off. I live close to Bridgeport, CT and Briidgeport has always been a great city even if it does have some corruption. In the old timer department, Bridgeport can't be beat. I have a beautiful ooak armchair in my living room that spent over thirty years on the sidewalk in front of a liquor store. The owner used to sit on that chair from the time he opened until he locked up and went home. One day he never got up to close the shop. He just fell asleep in the chair and died. His daughter sold me the chair for $15.00!
Tomorrow I will go down to Bridgeport and kickk some tires in the oldest barber shops I can find. Maybe I'll get a shave and haircut. Maybe I'll even be able to buy some old razors!
Thanks for this great idea.

+1 to icedog for owning a chair that someone died in. And I mean that seriously... you seem to cherish it, so good for you. I have had one straight shave in Dallas and it was with a disposable blade at a place called Brownie's on Lemmon Avenue, downtown. Jockeys also told me of a place called King Barber in Richardson (just outside of Dallas proper) where you can get one. Brownie's is $15 for the shave alone and if you ask for Ray, you'll get a phenomenal shave. I called King and their standard straight shave is around $25, but he said he'd be happy to use one of mine if I brought it in. David is the guy's name at King barber and I'll post their website below as well. In response to Lee's post/question, I'm all about completing such a map, if someone will direct me. I didn't click on the link you were referring to as I am in a hurry to get to bed and the post was 1.5 yrs old. I believe Texas now has a state-wide mandate of disposables only for sanitation purposes. I'm thinking if I go to King, I will take my brush and mug as well and let him do the whole thing. Soon enough, I may have my own location to post as a spot for available shaves, but I'll have to get back to you guys on that. Business plans take forever on paper and I haven't even started... And before anyone asks, no, I am not going to barbering college.
King Barber

Thanked: 0Asagaya, Tokyo, Japan - The first place I had my own real straight razor shave.
I had always seen my dad get a straight razor shave (somewhere in Grand Rapids, MI - it was years ago and not sure of the name of the place), but this was MY first time getting one.
excellent hair cut and excellent shave (around $45 USD) maybe it was $60.. haircut and shave... very very traditional cut - no buzzers or anything. 'buzzed' my head with an old style scissors then the shave with a straight. Got 1/3 in all the way around and a shave for either 45 or 60, I forget!

Thanked: 586I went down to Bridgeport this morning to find a "full service barber". I was right to start my search in Bridgeport. I stopped at the first barber shop I noticed. The barber's name was Victor and was a very nice man but he doesn't shave customers. I told him although I could use a haircut, it was a shave I was looking for.
"Okay my friend" he said in a huge and smiling voice, "Do you know where is East Main Street? I will send you to get the best shave you ever get."
"Sure I know East Main. Where on East Main?"
"You know Dairy Queen?"
"Yes, I know where Dairy Queen is".
"Right across the street. My friend Paul is there. He will shave your beard, cut your hair. He is excellent but he doen't speak English."
"Is he Italian?" I asked Victor because I speak a little Italian and Spanish.
"No, he is Turkish. We come from the same area in Turkey but Paul is here first, a long time ago".
So I thanked Victor and drove across town to East Main Street. Although I had just finished shaving, I wanted to check the place out so I knew where I'd be getting my haircut and shave tomorrow. As I pulled up in front of the place it dawned on me I have never been shaved by anyone before. Well, my whole belly was just shaved last Friday in preparation for my surgery but I was unconscious and I doubt they used a straight razor so that doesn't count.
I went into the immaculate, two chair shop and introduced myself to Paul, explaining (as directed) that Victor, the barber across town sent me. Paul was warm and happy, almost jolly. I told him I needed a haircut but not until tomorrow and I would like a shave too. Victor was right, Paul's English was very weak. After four or five attempts, we made contact. Yes, he does shave beards and he'll shave mine tomorrow and cut my hair too.
Paul walked me out to my car where it dawned on me that I hadn't specified the use of a straight razor. When I asked him, he had no clue what I was asking. Coincidentally, I had my dog Basil and a half dozen straight razors in my yellow MINI Cooper S. Without thinking my next action might wax a bit odd to this very proper elderly Turk, I reached into my car through the open passenger window and pulled a hefty 7/8 Heribert Wacker from the canvas tool bag on the floor in front of Basil's seat. As I spun around brandishing the now open, gleaming steel razor, Paul's face lit up like a fireworks display.
He asked if he could examine my razor which of course I gladly allowed. As he held my razor, Paul's English seemed to improve, dramatically. Or rmaybe the topic of discussion just became so narrow that communication was fully automatic. Paul said he would be shaving me with a straight razor, one that came from Germany when I was a little baby. He will be using his favorite razor.
I am excited and a little nervous.
