Thanked: 0First attempt...SCARY AS HELL!!!
Christmas came a little early this year for me as my gf gave me a straight from TAOS last Friday. I was shaving yesterday and decided to try some small easy spots with the straight, which is not honed yet because I'm trying to find a good honemeister locally (Las Vegas, if anyone has any suggestions knows anyone good please let me know) since I feel like it will take too long to get it back if i send it to someone because of the holidays. Honed or not, that thing is sharp as hell and does shave. I must say that it was much more difficult and scary than I anticipated. Still fun and exciting though! I can't wait to get it properly honed and try to do a full shave with it!

Thanked: 2591Sorry ,
I am confused, how is the razor scary sharp, yet you want to send it out for honing?
On another note, with time SR shaving will become less scary and much more pleasurable.Last edited by mainaman; 12-23-2009 at 05:32 PM.

Thanked: 0The razor is very sharp but not as sharp as it could be. I don't have any experience with this because it's my first but from everything I've read, new razors need to be honed in order to get a really razor sharp edge.
I've already taken a look in the classifieds and I'm talking to someone from there already. It just seems like I won't get it till after the holidays/new year =/

Thanked: 96I recommend everyone who is worried about stressing out their first straight razor shave get Lasik first.
Nothing... will EVER unnerve me after that. My first straight razor shave was as uneventful as my first bologna sandwich. Having a doctor clamp your eye open, ram a vacuum hose over it, then lower a giant laser machine over your head while you lay prone in a small dark room with one of those little squeezie stress balls in your hand is crazy. I laughed when they offered me prozac prior to the procedure... bad idea.
Dull razors are more unnerving than sharp ones. You'll shave yourself with a sharp razor without thinking, then when you reach for your aftershave notice your ear is in the sink. That's probably the most unsettling aspect of straight shaving, the razors are so sharp that pain sensation won't tell you if you messed up, the red tinted lather you wipe off the razor will.
Congrats on the first shave by the way. But shaving with a sharp razor is a whole different (much better) experience. Hurry up and get that sucker honed.

Thanked: 235If the first time isn't scary, then there is no point doing it. I think this applies to most things in life.

Thanked: 2591I beg to disagree. I find straight shaving extremely satisfying, but I was not even remotely worried with my first shave, in fact it went just great. I feel that may be people that are terrified during their first shave, might be influenced by the stereotypes instilled by all the movies that we have seen murders with straight razors.

Well, fisrt off, Max live in Vegas. He's one of the best restorer's/honer's around period. It's like living by Lynn. Check Max's work here on the forum. Also, You are new. Don't expect to get a great shave the first time you pick up the blade. This takes time and patience. It could be your prep, your angle, etc...If you bought the blade and it was not pre honed, it will appear to be sharp to the touch, but not to shave with, believe me. It should be able to cut your arm hair very easily. Send it to Max, then go from there, in the mean time, Read the wiki here, all of it that pertains to shaving. it tells you how to prepare, how to hold the blade, how to make a good lather. etc....
If you cannot find Max, PM me and I'll hook you up.....We have assumed control !

You will really appreciate a properly honed SR! I shaved with one I thought was shave ready, but compared to after getting it honed by a hone meister... wow!
