Because the chicks dig it! Well, that, and my grandfather was a barber who taught me the basics.

Thanked: 20Sweeny Todd, just kidding, a bit, ok, just had to be the first to say it.
Started with an electric and that was fine while I pretended I could grow facial hair, then gel and mock3 for quite a while, but shaving was a whenever thing. Then I got a girlfriend, yeah took a few years but I had better things to do than worry about girls, some guys hit that at 15, I was 22, whatever. since she likes the super smooth, and I like what she likes, I moved to a shick 4blade that let me do ATG so that was good, but $$$$. At some point I also decided to start cutting some of the chemicals out of my environment, and an easy one was shave gel, moved to shave oil. then I saw a straight at an antique shop, bought it, cleaned it up, found SRP, and now I have a badass shave, and a happy fiance. what more can a man want?

I just like really sharp things !! I think it is really incredible to be able to make things that sharp and then use them. I sharpen my hand planes and chisels to a mirror polish and then I just have to use them. To cut a smooth ribon of wood with ease or to shave my face so smoothly with something I sharpened myself. It is kind of a zen thing I guess.

I have always loved and collect knives. As I got a little older I started collecting swords. Straight razors only makes perfect sense. I started shaving with a DE. Ive tried disposables, cartidge, and electric shavers. I bought a nice chrome mach3, brush, stand and bowl set. I started searching for shaving products online. Straight razors always came up. Then I discovered this awesome place, I read and learned. I'm soon to be 42. I bought my Dovo Bergischer Lowe from Classic shaving in 10-12-08, joined here the same month. It has been awesome. This is the way I'm supposed to shave.

Thanked: 227I initially had a mach 3 and gel, which caused me serious issues with ingrown hairs, so I thought I would tintersearch why, and I found what they do to your skin........ So I opted for a DE, still using the gel or canned goop, but when I was out buying canned goop I found a cheap synthetic brush and soap, that cost less than the goop and being a poor student thought hey why not, it worked for the olden guys and went for it. I was still getting the odd ingrown hair and found it was likely by blade was clogging and causing the hair to pull out, so I decided I had to find a way to rectify this so went hunting and found an article somewhere that said this wasn't an issue with a straight razor and that there is a much cleaner gentler shave, so I decided that was where I was going, my uncle gave me an old shavette, I used it for a couple of months then bought a real straight, because I figured, just onwe outlay and i'm done, and loving it, but now I buy soaps when I can, scents when I can yadda yadda, yes I am acquiring an aquisition disorder, but I've also realised how much better it is for yonder environment, which makes me happy

Thanked: 12I like to do things in old ways. My work is very high-tech, so maybe it's a reaction to that - many of my hobbies have tended to have a Luddite flavor. It turns a chore into a skill - I actually look forward to shaving. And I've been using a straight razor most of my adult life, so it's not just a passing fad for me.
But mostly I like it because it forces me to pay attention to what I'm doing. (Come to think of it, that applies to most of my hobbies and passions in life. My way of relaxing is to concentrate harder, I guess...) But I think we do too many things on autopilot nowadays. It's nice to have an activity that requires attention from start to finish, with blood and gore as the consequence of letting your mind drift...

I clicked on a barber shop shave at the waldorf hotel on YOU TUBE by mistake and a light bulb went off in my head. I called my 75 year old uncle in PA. and asked him if he had any of grandpaps straight razors because he was a barber from 1929-1980,and replied yes i do.My uncle brought one up and i told him i was going to keep grandpaps tradition alive,my uncle said, your FRIGGIN CRAZY!! let the RAD begin.
