Thanked: 0I pretty much agree with your logic, Bingobango. I like to feel the progress of each pass as it reduces my beard. Furthermore, men with more sensitive skin need to rinse the soap off before it dries to avoid irritation.
The cold water method would literally murder my face. No joke! My face would be red and bumpy for two weeks.

I've never even thought of rinsing between passes, but just had to try it as inspired by Jimmys post.
Didn't find any significant benefits, so maybe i'll stick with my old manners.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Thanked: 335I don't rinse between either - I just rub my face with ice cubes, occasionally dunk face in ice water, and then will re-rub with more cubes. Then I'm ready for the 2nd pass. I've made a bench hone of frozen denim and like to refresh and refreeze the edge on my razor with it between passes.

Rinse I Must!
I always rinse after my 1st. pass, to work on my stategy for my next pass. And ALWAYS rinse with very cold water to figure up my final touch ups. I, IMHO, think it makes the wiskers stand up for final decapitation, if I spell that right!! And before my Thayers after balm I use very cold rinse and them my Alum Block for final astrigement!!
Choose to have a great day and it wil all work out for you in the end.
tinkersd of SRP!!

Thanked: 0One thing that I have tried was to put on pre-shave oil just before the second pass, re-lather, and then shave. However, I think that the oil might work better on the third pass to give my skin a little extra moisture before the final pass.
Newbie Question : What is the purpose of the cold-water as part of the pre-shave routine?

Thanked: 6I find that sometimes I rinse between shaves, and some times I don't. The only reason being that I'm inconsistent. I haven't noticed a whole lot of difference, but I might get a little more slide when I don't rinse. As for using cold water, I always do, because even when I used hot, it didn't stay warm long enough to be of any use. I'll have to try it both ways again and see if I notice the difference when I'm looking.

It isn't just the pre-shave
see this thread here for a further explanation. Might be considered an advanced shaving technique, might not.

When I started wetshaving with a DE, I washed before the shave, used hot towels, and rinsed between passes. After switching to a straight, I've knocked off one after another of those things, and now I've been doing it exactly as Jimmy said in the first post: lathering on a dry face, and no rinsing between passes. It just seems to work the best for me.

I tried your method Jimmy of re-lathering without rinsing and it seems to make the next pass a bit smoother. I also seem to be getting better shaves. Apparently the soap left over from previous pass adds something to the newly applied lather. Thanks for the tip.
