Default Try not rinsing between lathering... you'll like it.

When I got started wet shaving with a DE I had never done multiple passes. With the old Gillette 'Good News' disposable I would do one pass and call it good. So I learned to do multiple passes and to rinse before I re-lathered. I switched to shaving with straight razors exclusively a couple of years ago. Then in a thread posted on SRP a half a year ago a fellow mentioned that he never rinsed between lathering and I decided to try it.

I didn't care for the no rinse method the first time I tried it but I continued to do it and after a couple of times I began to like it better. When I rinsed between lathering I slathered it on my wet face and it didn't stick as well as it does if I just grab the brush and slap it on there without the rinse.

Taking it a step further, now that I shave with cold water my prep consists of lathering, rubbing the lather in with my fingers and re-lathering. I do not wash my face first but I apply the initial lather to my dry face. No shower beforehand either. I begin with a dry face. It is not for everybody. One way or the other if you've been rinsing between lathering give the no rinse method a try. I think you'll like it as much as I do but..... YMMV.

I rinse between lathering for a few reasons:
    1. I get off any dried lather and loose cut off whiskers.
    2. The water helps make the lather a little sudsier AND I prefer my lather a little more watery for the ATG pass.
    3. I can feel what my whiskers will be like for the next pass and make mental notes for improving the first pass or to catch some stray hairs on the next pass.

Number 3 is probably real useful for newbies. Sometimes, I'll just consider the first pass good enough and call it a day.

Sounds interesting and an excuse to experiment with something new and different. Now that I think about it why rinse soap/lather off then put it back on, seems like an extra step that would add to your shaving time especially when doing multiple passes. I'll have to give it a try this evening.

I never heard of rinsing between passes. Although, now I am intrigued. I might try in on a weekend when I have more time to devote to the shave.

I've done it both ways and have settled on the place in between.

Between latherings I splash water on the face. Not enough to rinse, but enough to help the lathering.

I was under the impression that rinsing between latherings was necessary, if only to provide more lubrication for the lather. I've noticed with my own shaves that drier [skin and] lather tends to encourage nicks, so I've been somewhat obsessive about a wet face before lathering and re-lathering. It's all a big learning process for me, and I don't pretend to know what I'm doing. I am, however, getting BBS shaves and having lots of fun in the process!

Interesting... It had never even occurred to me to try rinsing between passes. I've always just lathered, knocked the hair off, relathered, and knocked more hair off...

I may have to try a rinse in between sometime to see how it feels.

Glad I started this thread. What I find really interesting is that some who never rinsed are going to try rinsing in between now. Either way gentlemen, if you're experimenting with rinsing or not rinsing please give us an update later on whether the new way or the old way is preferable.

I rinse between passes, but I towel my face off before I relather. A drier face does help with the lathering.
