    Unhappy It Must Be Catching!

Yesterday, I used my 11/16 Union Cutlery SPIKE razor and you know it, three nice little nicks from the sharp spike. Now I now why it is called a spike. Other than the three cuts, it was a great close shave. The irony was that I was really trying to watch out for the point. I think concentrating on "not cutting" myself was the real problem. It made me too uptight. I will take a Valium or have a glass of wine just before I use this razor again.

I think they're mine, too, mostly from an aesthetic perspective--to me they just have a more elegant look than the round-points. And they definitely make you stay completely in the moment! My first razor was a spike Bengall, and it was definitely intimidating at first, but I love shaving with it.

I have 4 razors in my rotation right now. All are spikes except one. It is a John Nessbitt round point. The other 3 are a Royal Brand USA, a ERN Wald, and an 1880s Frederick Reynolds. I have muted the Royal Brand's heel and spike. It bit me the other day and it was a bad one. Earlobe. I also get around the nostrils pretty good too. they hurt like a paper cut. I won't mute the other 2 spikes. I ran it for the first time yesterday muted and liked the fact when I did hit my earlobe it did not cut it. ALso I can go ATG on my upper lip up into my nostrils nearly, now that it is muted. Before I couldn't do that due to the toe wanting to dig in.

Update: Bismark came up in the rotation today. There was a little trepidation at first causing some razor burn on my right cheek. But then I settled in and got a nice, near BBS shave out of it with no blood drawn. Now I no longer hate this little spike point.

Tomorrow ought to be much less tense. I plan on using a Helma 88 round point I just picked up at the antique store.

I don't advise shaving over blood. It can rust the edge
