Need help choosing a DE for my wife
Well my wife stole my travel merkur DE, and loves it, but she wants something with a longer handle that has more weight to it.
I am thinking of getting her a non adjustable razor, so she doesnt get overwhelmed with options (not sure though since I dont shave my legs), but I need something that will shave close, can stand up to lots of abuse, and can last the longest when constantly used in the shower, and most probably abused and not dried off, etc.
Someone had mentioned a brass DE would stand up well, but I havent seen any of those around, at least none that were in working order.
Can anyone help me out with some ideas???
Thanks!

Thanked: 2You can get some great "Lady Gillettes" on ebay. I've seen them for sale on SMF, where some of the guys use them too. Great shavers, extra long handle, solid weight. They come in metallic colors of blue or pink, with little stars on them. At least I think that's what I remember. I don't own one myself. They are all vintage and can be picked up for about 5-15$ I believe.
Good luck,

Thanked: 346Weren't all the old gillette's nickel-plated brass? Those should stand up as well as anything. Gillette made some long-handled versions for women. Check ebay or put in a request over at B&B or SMF.

Josh,
The Ladies Gillette is a good way to go. They're well made and look nice and you can find them on eBay for under $50. Also, the long handle (4 inch) men's adjustable is a good alternate. She may like the adjustable better because it's...well, ...adjustable.
Here's a few I found doing a quick search:
Ladies model:
280017783935
170016957398
280017488167
Men's long handle adjustable:
230016845813
110018406994 (a more rare gold and black version)
300017437795
I don't know anything about the sellers, I just found them doing a search.

ya, most of the old chrome gillettes should be brass underneath, they just plated em..... should hold up fine.

I used the term *vintage Gillette* to find the ones I sent to you. They stopped making those Lady Gillette razors years ago so they don't come around that often. When I was buying Gillette DEs, some of the sellers that had good stuff were rravenn, and ptbsr. Sometimes the seller amkesterson has some good stuff but she does not use PayPal so it's a pain to mail off a money order. rravenn also cleans and sterilizes them so they're ready to go when they arrive. I think ptbsr does also. Happy hunting.

Thanked: 0jl,
just a couple of questions. how did your wife know how to use it? if i understand correctly, there's quite a difference between technique for a DE as opposed to a disposable safety razor like a lady schick. specifically, how does she use them on her legs?
i ask because i'd like to get my girlfriend to try the DE that firestart was kind enough to send me, but i don't want her cutting the shit out of her legs and i can't really instruct her since i just got it and haven't tried it yet, myself. i think i gave up on getting my brother to try it.
and what's really wierd is, I really want to try it because somehow i think that's going to be fun, and at the same time reluctant to try it because that means i'll have to wait another day or so to shave with my straight again. what the hell kind of a wierd obsession is this?

My fiancee uses my 5/8 dovo straight for her legs. Now I need to buy a new dovo because she doesn't want to give it back.
I say to hell with the DE, get her to go str8

Just making a disclamer here:
My kindness had nothing to do with it. All I did was pass on the torch. The kindness comes from Tony M who sent me the DE and the two remaining blades come from Ed.
I tried it out, it was ok, even converted a buddy from fusionism, but I found the SE shaving experience to be superior, so I passed it on to someone who needed it more.
So just to re-iterate, it's Tony M and Ed that really deserve the credit for the kindness. Thank you gentlemen, as you can see, your gifts are still doing the Lord's work
