Thanked: 0Razor is on the way!!
11/16 Hollow Ground Westenholm, gosh am I excited. Bought it right here from the classifieds! I've got a vintage Old Spice mug that I'll use with my Williams shaving soap. New strop also coming in. Really tired of shaving with the safety razors I have now. I currently have just a Plain Jane synthetic brush that i'll be using for awhile but I can't complain.
I know generally the round points are better daily shavers instead of the french/irish points but I thought it looked more bad ass, and if it looks more bad ass, i'll be more confident, hence the reason i got it. Reputable seller (though they didnt reply to my e-mail but i might have done something wrong there).
Just thought I'd share the excitement!
First blade if you didn't notice..

Congrats! You should 1) post pics of your goodies when they arrive, and 2) keep this thread updated as you continue on your straight razor journey. I love hearing about folks' progress along the way. Again, congrats on the pickup, and hope you have many happy shaves in the future.

Thanked: 0Thanks Maybe I will do that! I'm letting my beard grow out a little before my razor gets here so I can get a good shave the day it comes!

Round points may be better for learning but you need technique if you plan to shave with spike/square or French/Irish point and get out both BBS and unscathed.
I prefer the latter for my daily shavers,
I have some fine shaving round toe razors but I do not seem to pick them up as much.Last edited by pfries; 04-02-2013 at 01:49 AM.

Thanked: 1184Who said the round points are better ? Better is the smile on your face when you get what you want and enjoy it. That's way better. I don't know where your at but I know CVS has boar brushes for 5 or 6 bucks and I hear Target has badger for 11. Just saying, if the synthetic is working for you, great. Let us know how it's going for sure.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 0First shave today!! No terrible cuts but my chin area got scathed! I just did my cheeks and attempted to do my chin and mustache area, its still kindof awkward and im not sure how to hold the blade when i'm shaving around there. switching to my left hand was no problem at all, i was a little shakey at first. but it got easier. My girlfriend was wondering why it took 40 minutes to showered and shave compared to my usual 15mins! haha
Looks like i'll be resorting to some youtube video's tonight...

In regards to the chin, shaving against the grain is a bit tricky to get used to...I know, I just started yesterday haha yesterday I only did with the grain but today I was a bit more bold and went against.
Back to the chin, try first going with the grain, then across one way, across the other way, and then against the grain to finish it off.
I find that worked out better for me because the longer the whiskers, the more likely it is to pull (if you know what I mean).
Remember to lather between passes as well! Heck, I even lather after my shave, leaving it on as I clean up my supplies, because it feels nice and soothing! Just be sure to brush it on DOWN after the shave, as opposed to UP before the shave (to help raise the hairs, idk if you know that so I mention it )
It get's better every dayLast edited by kwlfca; 04-06-2013 at 02:19 AM.

Thanked: 0Ill take some pictures of what I have tomorrow! Ill be sure to upload then too,
My lather really sucked yesterday and I'll probably end up buying some tabac or Taylor of Old Bond Street. Right now I have Williams mug soap which I thought was great for a dollar... Good practice for lather though!
Thanks for the advice!

Thanked: 25Water is the key to Williams. When you think you have enough, add more. Its not a bad soap at all once you get the hang of lathering it.
