I use a damp sponge to wipe suds off the blade during the shave ( it sits on the edge of the sink). Then a finish rinse under the faucet.. Then wipe it down with a towel and then a finish wipe with tissue paper...BUT NO WIPING BACK AND FORTH......JUST WIPE IN ONE DIRECTION... YOU WILL NOT SLICE YOUR FINGER IN HALF USING THE ONE DIRECTION METHOD.... Am I clear ????

Speaking from experience? If so I hope you are ok.
Don't know if it for better or worse but due to circumstance I don't have supplies of fresh towels each day or heaps of room to set up a shaving temple so I just strop the soap off on my arm (carefully, wouldn't want to go the wrong way) then give it a proper clean at the end on my hand towel. If this is really bad let me know as I am very new to this.

If you stay with this hobby long enough.....the blade is just as sharp now as it was when you were a noob....in other words ...if your not paying attention...you will pay !!!!!

After watching "Chanuck" (I think) video with his 7 day TI set, two things I learnt from it and use myself. A sponge which I use to "wipe" using a strop motion the lather off between passes and other thing is to wipe my fingers on Alum to help with strching the skin.

I also wipe with a dry flannel and finnish with toilet paper to dry scales and blade.

I have always rinsed the blade and then wiped it dry...just the way I was taught.

While shaving I rinse under piping hot running water. After I'm done I wipe the blade -carefully!!- on a towel and once a week I degrease it with acetone and let dry. If it's going to be stored for more than a couple of days -especially during the wet season in Delhi or essentially all of the time when I'm at my place in Europe- I apply a thin coat of ballistol. Stinks to high heaven but works rather well.

Try to use Vaseline oil. I all of the time use it for my str8s. No smell, recommended for use for skin, never drys out in oppose for other organic oils.

Good question, however, this is one of those 'eternal' straight shaving questions that get asked again and again and again. I'm not 'dissing' the question, it's just interesting, if you have no life and spend an inordinate amount of time here, how often you see such a question. I think we need a thread titled 'The Top Ten Eternal Straight Razor Questions'.

I wipe on a damp face cloth folded in two laid on the bench. Two thirds of the way through the shave I fold the cloth over to make a square, as the cloth is covered with five or so lines of cream and whiskers.

Often, part way through the shave I wipe the tang on a dry bath towel, as I hate soap or cream on the tang; I like a nice dry grip.

Post shave, I pinch a dry bath towel between thumb and forefinger of my right hand and draw the blade through it. Normally once. I often rub a little after on the stabilisers (if the razor has them) or the area where the frame meets the blade (if it's a frameback).

    I then strop 10/10 (linen/leather)

I then wipe the blade with a tissue with Eucalyptus oil on it.

I do understand rinsing, but I like to see the result of the shave on the face cloth and rinsing may lead to shaking which may lead to dinging on the tap. Also, I feel water may enter the pivot area and cause issues. I think it's pretty hard (for me at least) to get rid of ALL the water in the pivot area. When you look at old razors, the majority of patina, staining and rust is in the pivot. I love patina; but I like an even patina most. A black or grey stain in the pivot area to me speaks of a razor unused for some time with moisture between the scales and blade; and I'd rather minimise that as much as I can.

Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

I leave a hot water trickle into an empty sink with the plug pulled.

I spend a lot of time here because of the rediculous amountof down time i get at work and because i have j.ust got my shaving L's. I too like to see what I have removed, and use my right hand to wipe my razor I think this is because I am left handed.
