I have a Gem Micromatic single edge. The DE I have is a Gillette. The Micromatic is aggressive or so I'm told. I don't have anything to compare it to aside from cartridges and straights.

Personna looks middle of the road. I had Feather. I like the sharpness. It wasn't nearly as scary as some made it sound. Then again, what do I have to compare it too??

I figured the Personnas would be a good place to start. My fave Gem is the Micromatic as well. Super-shaver, for me. A few other gems were quite weak. Don't like pressing down much!
And like you, not anything else to compare them to. Not gonna get used much, anyway! Cannot hone the things!

Tom, not ashamed to admit, I love some of my DEs. Particularly the slants, but also Gillette Big Fellow, and the Barbasol. Shave with them occasionally . Kind of like riding a Honda, you might enjoy it, as long as no one knows about it.
