Thanked: 884That was either Francis "Gabby" Gabreski's or Robert Johnson's plane. Both had 28 victories in that type of plane.
From what I can see of other pics of Gabby's plane,
it looks the plane that Gabby flew, as Johnson's plane had the victory marking done differently.
Here's gabby's plane after he crash landed in Germany and was captured. He got too low on an airfield strafing run and bent the prop.
Johnson's plane.
If dad is still around ask him.

Sadly my dad passed away in 2002 but he left us plenty of memories. I still mourn for him at times. I have the book my dad had of the 56th Fighter group before my sorry ass brother got his hands on it. It has all the names of all the members, flying aces & all. That is how I got these rare pics also. I went to my moms house one day & grabbed them all before they disappeared along with many other things that are missing. My dad had the piece of scrapnel they dug out of him from a German V2 rocket that hit right behind him demolishing a structure that was once there. I have the pic of him standing there after he got out of the hospital. I have looked & looked for that piece of scrapnel & I can't find it any where. I never give up looking for it. Next time I'm over there, i'll look for it more. Here's another cool photo of the men surrounding a plane.
