Default Did you just drop that!!???

Yesterday after work I stopped in at one of my usual antique malls that I hadn't been into for a while to see if there were any new blades in stock. Right at the front door I see 4 and thought, Yesssss! Get the girl over to open up the case and I go over them all. Even at $20 a piece, nothing worth buying except.......... A Bengall that I notice has perfect Ivory scales. YOINK, donor scales!

I carry on with my search and the lady puts the razor at the front for me. I get down another Isle and I see 2 very nice Sheffield blades in a glass cabinet. Get the girl again and I have a once over. The first one is a very nice Sheffield, Joseph Rodgers with Diamond edge blade etch, horn scales that also read Diamond edge, and a very nice matching box. But I pass on the blade due to over honing on the toe.

Next blade has very good condition blade, hardley any hone wear, Beautiful ivory scales, and serious rust over the tang. I couldn't even see a makers mark..... but that ivory!!! No cracks just a bit of warping. My initial thought is, "Man those scales would look good on that naked Tally Ho I have sitting at home"..... But I pass on it too.

Next day.... I regret not buying both blades so I got back. Get the kind lady to get both razors out for me again and I tell her, I'll take both. She asks me if I'm going to continue shopping, I say no and I'll pay for them now.... Now at these antique malls, they do not like customers walking around with sharp objects so typically they take them for you. As I walk away, I hear behind me what sounds like a heavy razor hitting the ground. I turn around and see her pick something up from the floor.... Oh geez, I hope that wasn't the ivory one!!! We get to the front and I can't see the razors yet as she carries them behind the desk where she starts to package them up for me. I try to see what she's doing and I can't, so I straight up ask her "did you drop one of the razors?" She turns around and I can immediately tell that she messed up real good by the look on her face. "Yes." she says. "Are they ok?" I say "Ya I think they're fine."
At this point I can see bright white peering at my from a fresh break in the scale. "Can I see that white one please." Well, she brings it over to me and the wedge end is completely broke in half. "it's broke." I say annoyed. " I don't think I want this one any more." She was very apologetic, but I really had no compassion for her at the time. Once I got to my truck I had a few choice words I yelled, but once I started to drive, I slowly started to feel bad for the girl. The Ivory was some of the thinnest I've ever seen, and I know she was fighting with keys, the 2 razors, and both boxes. Maybe I should have offered her a hand instead of charging to the front to pay.

Here's the Joseph Rodgers Diamond edge that I ended up getting. Hone wear on the toe, but I think can be made good again. Unfortunately, I think the etch will be lost in doing so.

Sad to hear that tale of woe. I really don't like the idea that she tried to palm the busted razor off on you regardless. If you hadn't asked and gone out the door with it, I'd bet you have a hard time getting a return.

She had no intention of telling me it was broken, and you're exactly right about the return. I'm not sure they even do returns at these malls. I wonder what the owner of the booth will say next week when they come to restock. I'm sure they'll see the razor in a slightly different condition, from when they last saw it. If she wasn't going to tell me, I'm sure she wont tell anyone else.

One time a saleslady who owned the little antique store opened the blade that I asked to see,, then ran her thumb across the edge drawing blood. "Oh !! it's still sharp!!" , she said as she ran to the counter for her small first-aid kit.

This is why I started to feel a bit bad for the girl after I cooled down a bit. I know crap happens, I've even dropped razors in the past. But she should have just come clean, straight up and said " I messed up big time." I would have understood.

    Andrew, an entertaining read!
However, better to save the etch and do a bit here and there. JMO!

AHHHH! Ouch! My buddy cut himself on an old Gillette DE that still had a blade in it at the antique store. "You idiot, your tetnis up to date?"

I think it was Karma coming after me.... I was on the clock when I went in, and on the way to a job. I was trying to hurry to get out of there and get back to work.

I thought someone might say that about the etch. Maybe leave the wear at the top and try and blend away the wear at the edge?

Yeah. Start with 2 layers, wear the top layer in. Add a layer. Just change the top layer from there.

    See what happens?
