Tried the floss and sence there are no washers on the insides it seems to get stuck in the pivot. No extra room as they are not loose. But went for it and worked the best i could. I did use a small brush and razor blade and got rid of a lot of it on one razor so far. Plus one cut on a knuckle. At this rate i might loose a finger by the time im done as i cut another finger today honing. Guess its part of the fun. I do have some cross stitch thread in the house and its called floss. I might give it a try. Sence its not coated in wax like dental floss I bet it should hold polish nicely. This is going to be a long process. Glad I got three more days off.
Thanks for the reply Roy. Now I need to ask the wife if we have any mineral oil. It's just Sharpening, right?

Jerry, the 'cross stitch thread'/called floss should work in place of the upholstery thread. The upholstery thread is really heavy duty and is also not waxed so it and the cross stitch should also hold the metal polish. However I can't vouch for the durability of the cross stitch tread.
Remember what I first told you about Straight Razors. 'Patience' is of the upmost importance. Don't try to 'dig' the string into the pivot. GENTLY use it to rub against the scales, the pivot and the blade.

That's a fantastic looking set right off the bat and can only get better with a little time and effort. What I have done in the past for safety sake is to cover the edge with a piece or two of electrical tape. Save those fingers!!
Good luck!

I got time. I just ran out of projects so this one is next. Not to stuff the thread in the pivot. OK. I was wondering how it was going to get in there. Guess it isn't. I got one cleaned but need to buy mineral oil. You should have seen the look on the wifes face when I asked her where the mineral oil was. She said she didn't know we had any. Ha. She's a good old bird and supports me in my crazy hobbies.
I did cover the edge with tape just to cut down on the cuts. They razors are sharp but not shaving ready. Holy Grail of set? I dont know about that being new, but I'm happy with them.
I will say in front of the whole crew here that "STEEL" was the fine gentleman who contacted me by PM and offered this set. And for a good price. I just wanted to thank STEEL in public but had been holding off. He seems like a quite sort and dont post a lot. A bit of mystery in the guy. I will admit I was a little hesitant to deal with him at first, but after a few PM's he seemed like a good guy. What a fine member he is to help me to get my first 7 day set!
And BTW, (sorry to go on) I also got a praising PM from a member the other day about how well I'm growing in this hobby and that he's been watching me. Was afraid I'd be another that jumped in and lost control but was happy I've picked up everything people were throwing at me. It sure is nice to deal with and talk with such a great group of folks. Thanks to ALL OF YOU! I'd buy you ALL a beer but afraid the trip around the world to find you all would set be back a bit too much. ha.It's just Sharpening, right?

What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one
