Default My first 7 day set

got this in the mail today and just had to show it. The box is in need of some working as some of the corners are coming loose along with the felt on the insides. The tages have some rust and a couple spots of active rust too but blades look good. Mappin and Webb. The inscrition under the name says:

    Queen Victoria St.
    E.C.

Nothing on the back of the tangs or tails.

One crack at a pin and another tiny crack at onther pin but for a good price (as in, I paid less than a cheep set on the web) I just couldn't pass them up. And being Ivory Scales, just had to have it.

thanks guys. I cleaned the purple felt/suede on the inside of the box and put some glue on the joints on the box and its now holding together nicely. Now working on filling the days of the weeks words on the top of the spines with the quick and dirty method posted here on the forum by Euclid440.
Wondering how I'm going to get the active rust out of the pivot area without unpinning? Dont want to break anything so unpinning dont sound like a good idea. Going to scrape at it with a blade but...

If you stake the blade and work dental floss or thin butcher twine in between with some polish you should be able to work some of that out. Careful is key, that's how I broke my first set of scales. Thin butcher twine seems pretty good as it holds a lot of polish and it is easy to separate bunches of the fiber out for thinner pieces. The dental floss gets into the tight spots but does not carry a lot of polish. A razor blade will get the edges. Stabilize your cracks with CA and moisturize them with a little light mineral oil.

Thanks for the details Rez. I'll give it a go. Got dental floss but not butcher string. But I see that a rougher thin string would work better. Its got a bit of rust on the jimps too. Plus they are a bit rounder now. Wondering if I could carefully take a three sided file to the jimps? Or would that damage them in some way?

BTW, I tried to put a quick edge on the Saturday razor and gave it a go. Just not sharp enough. I guess you cant rush things. I'll have to spend a few days honing these as I hone slowly. I guess if you were to watch a vid of Glen or Lynn, they do 2.5 strokes to my one. ha.

    Jerry,

I'm glad that your set arrived safe and sound.

RezDog's suggestion is Excellent. I would expand a bit.

#1 Stop by a JoAnnes and pick up a small spool of Upholstery thread. It is quite durable and can be folded over and over and then twisted around and around to build up to a much larger diameter to hold the metal polish.

#2 Use a soft toothbrush with the metal polish around the pivot. You will be surprised how much will come off and very quickly.

Any questions/you know where I am.

    Have fun.
