That's about $243 for the Dovo and $303 for the Japanese straight in US dollars. $1US = 103.675 JPY
The brushes look to have good prices, like $10 and $20 why was the center one more than the badger though? It looks like a boar's hair brush?Last edited by bevansmw; 04-19-2008 at 09:32 AM.

Thanked: 131I think the centre one was boar hair but he didnt seem to know. And I will compare later on tonight but I am fairly sure the chinese one- the cheapest one- is badger hair for real.
I get the feeling if i'd posted these sooner you guys would have wanted me to buy them for you and send them on.....
Maybe ask O_S nicely....

OTOH the tosuke handled razor is 9450 and the feather looks at a fairly decent price as well...

Thanked: 22Oh dude, the Kanji says Kreiger.
It basically says its a really fine, hard final polishing stone for razors. Also says Nakayama and I cannot tell you yet, the difference between that Kanji for Nakayama, (other than its easier to read) and the Shouhonyama Kanji which refers to the Nakayama quarry.
Its a Bismark, not that means anything to me, but might to you.
Judging by the pic after enlarging, it appears the canter brush is from France. So I imagine that fact and the shipping fees when importing, play a role in the price. The one on the right is made in Germany.
Unless he changes his business hours, I don't see myself visiting his store anytime in the near or even distant future. Whenever I am sent to Kyoto its usually in the AM and I'm back by 1300ish.
Bloody good price for the Tosuke one.
It's torture knowing that such a cool shop exists, yet I can't go there.

Thanked: 131Oh come on. Kyoto is so close to you that you could be 'sick' one day, go there, buy what you want and be back for the following day EASY.
Go on... be a devil... live on the edge (no pun intended) and i'm sure we wont tell.....
[little voice on O_S's shoulder says: Hmmm... perhaps SK is right.... I could be quick and they are VERY good prices. And the shop IS very close to me. <drools over razors> hmmm... ]

Thanked: 22LOL, well the only thing I am really interested in looking at are the Norton hones, but the thing is, depending on their price, which I assume to be slightly higher than in the states, it would more than likely be significantly cheaper to import some myself. Bus + train + hones = Big YEN vs. hones + shipping = Little yen. (hopefully.)
I have actually been thinking of seeing is Suehiro make a 1k hone and maybe getting a progression of them 1k 4k and 8k.

Thanked: 735Was it a knife store, or an antiques store?
I travel to Japan 1-2 times a year to Osaka. Kyoto is a 45 minute train ride away.
I had thought to peruse the byways of Kyoto to see what I could turn up myself. Thanks for sharing!

Thanked: 131Hard to say. It was kind of like an old ironmonger. It sold razor stuff and related, alot of knives, scissors (ie professional- for hairdressers) nail clippers..... all manner of stuff.
Perhaps there is a description of the store in Kanji on the buisness card?
