How may thousands of eyes less do you have on SRP compared with say, EBAY?
You miss the auction part by posting on SRP, anywhere. And giving the members a heads up on an open auction somewhere else is nearly pointless.
...and therefore so is this thread. Now I understand.

With which rules is this a conflict?

Can't be upset if someone sells their gear, or if you miss the opportunity. As a buyer with specif desires try a WTB forum!
    Solicitations, valuations, and sales
These are not allowed on Straight Razor Place, including the Chat, except in the Vendors and Auctions sections, and the Classifieds, under the respective rules.

SRP's aims to help members in all aspects of wet shaving and straight razor techniques, it is not a marketing site. Furthermore the nature of appraisals, be they for items or services, is highly subjective.

    Classifieds

The purpose of the classifieds section is to provide a place for active members to occasionally buy, sell, or trade goods and or services of interest to others. The classifieds section is the sole property of SRP and as such SRP reserves the right to delete, remove or request the editing of any ad that is deemed not in the best interest of the site or its members. Neither SRP nor members of its management accept any responsibility or liability for transactions that go bad or are not as advertised. All problems with transactions should be worked out between the members involved. The following rules are in place to govern this section:

    See the rules of conduct for detailed parameters for listing in the classifieds ;

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm getting the impression that what he is looking for is an active exchange about collections and sales from it or possible purchases to add to it based on member's collections. But then, like you say, I could be wrong.
Thanks Richard, I didn't quite understand the OP. You've cleared it up for me.

Won't fly I'm afraid. It would be too loose to define parameters for what is 'expensive stuff', and would open the door for advertising violations.

Now one member, who knows that another is seeking high end razors, stones, whatever ....... may send a PM letting said member know he has this or that going on the block.

I personally have listed a WTB/WTT in our SRP Classifieds and come up with more than one obscure object of desire. So if anyone wants to do the same the effort might bear fruit.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, or as an old ironworker friend of mine used to say, "If you don't shake the tree, you don't get no fruit."

    Thank you JimmyHAD.
While other forums do brisk business in hard & software, THIS site is about the process of shaving. To exclude or limit commerce puts this site closer to Consumer Reports than Sears Catalog.
To deobfuscate is to convert something that is difficult to un͝d̡͝e҉͞r̴͝st̨̕a͘͢n̢̛d̕̕ ̧͝
into one that is simple, understandable and straightforward.

"Cold" PM'ing has worked well for me, both buying and selling. No rules saying you can't contact a member via PM and say
"That's a mighty fine ________, wanna sell it?" Or "Hey, heard you were looking for___________, I'd sell you mine"

    Funnin' ya...
The Iwasaki knife dude dropped in and dropped out. That was a beautiful example of the art. I am all in on the refined metallurgy of the Japanese Western combined with flamboyant scales. Just a cool combination, like the 'cheesy' scales on a Fili...

Mike speaks the truth. As someone shows something you like, you might like/need it more than they do. Also, if someone is looking for something and you have 2? Shoot them a PM if you care to part with one.
The key is to keep it private and off the general forum.
    Nothing wrong with asking.
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
    I rest my case.

Sure, seems ok to me. What can it hurt? If nothing comes of it, you may have just made the guys day by coveting his goods.
I do think of a fun post I made once of some museum grade razors that I said I got at a one table yard sale. I got a very polite PM axing me if perhaps I might just want to let go of those razors for double what I paid for them...I said I paid $75.00 for them
