I think we all and the world at large appreciate Neil, Zak and others. Karl's restorations, Mike's restoration and methods which he so freely shares. Tom's extensive and fabulous collection, Glen's honing advice, even I play my part as sometimes more of a cautionary tale of what NOT to do (maybe I'm just more honest than some), but even just some of the razors and stones we all encounter are part of shaving history.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget Mike's adventures in antique automotive engineering ...

Here's a little bit of a change in plans.
I thought of a way to possibly move the whole site as it is to a new faster server. This isn't guaranteed to work, but it won't take an enormous effort. I gave this a little test and things looked good, so I plan to try it sometimes this week - may be even tomorrow.
What this means is a downtime of several hours. And then, when the site reappears, it will be the same thing you see now but running on a better infrastructure. I won't destroy the current site because if it turns out there are issues with the new one we will switch back.
Moving to xenforo is still happening, on the same schedule as before, this is just the intermediate step, that I envisioned initially, getting back on the table. The way I was going to do it turned out to be too much work and it was better to not invest it in something temporary and short lived. With my current ideas it's worth giving it a shot.
To recap:
* In the next several days when you come you may see a note of some sort that the site is down for maintenance.
* A few hours later it should be available again.
* When it comes back there is a chance that there may be issues and you should let me know. I will probably also post a new thread in this section.
* If it comes to that, depending on how bad they are we will try to either fix them, or simply go back to the old server.

Thanked: 154A vegan, a crypto investor and a Gnunix sysadmin walk into a bar.
No that's not a joke, I just know because each proclaimed as soon as they entered.
(Sorry, had to) (Been there, done that, and I, too, relish only having to do it at home these days)Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.

Thanked: 292I do hope the site move/refurbishment goes smoothly. That tends to be the problem with any long-running web site. Eventually, the hardware and software become outdated. Unfortunately, in some instances, the site management, and administrators age as well.
Along with my interest in wet shaving, I am also interested in music. Recently one forum I visited often shut down due to health issues with the administrator. In another instance, after moving the web site to a new server, it was discovered that the forum software would not run on the new hardware platform, so the forum was discontinued. While parts of the web site are still up and running, the forum posts are no longer available. In a few months, the entire site will be discontinued.
I am not trying to be pessimistic, but moving a complex web site and forum to a new server may not be an easy task. I do hope there are no unexpected issues. Best wishes to the administrators.
