The library is also running off the new server, so may be give that a spin if you feel like it.

You gave me a link, but now it is not working?
It comes up with Debian LogoApache2 Debian Default Page?"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Yeah, sorry, got rid of it so that I can redo it and try to get something that didn't work the first time around. Actually I should've gotten rid of that apache default page as well, but I was testing something and at the end forgot about it. Very helpful - I was wondering why some of the bot traffic I was monitoring has decreased but haven't gotten to investigate - now I know it went there; now it's back to where it ought to go
BTW Apache2 is the guy who sends the site pages, debian is the flavor of the operating system I put on the server (similar to windows but better). I'll probably keep debian and replace apache at a later point, but they're doing their jobs reasonably well for now.

Again: no hablo computereze but from an end user point of view it is working fine considering all that I'm sure is going on behind the curtain.

Thanked: 154Minor issue
There seem to be some minor character encoding issues.
Example of such :

Thanked: 3225From the pov of a wilful computer illiterate, the site seems stable, and the old info is still there. I had to use the search function to fine an old post of mine from 2017 and it was found.

Yes, thanks. It looks like the database on the old server was encoded latin1 and on the new one we're utf8. I tried to fix it quickly in the morning, but got an error, so I may spend another half an hour when I get a chance, and then it goes to the lower priority list for a later time since it can wait.

Thanked: 154Yeah as I said it's minor.
And since it's a DB issue, I suppose [strike]it only affects old posts[/strike] nope scratch that, the two "?" In my example below are actually non ASCII characters (the one after the A being a copyright logo for example)
Still, encodings (might I say "cultures" in the broad sense) still being an issue nowadays prove they have their place in the hall of fame of IT pains in the neck along with time management and regexp...
And now that they've put trends and politics with emojis in unicode, I fear we're not headed the right way.
For the un-initiated, the idea is that we have given absolutely every character you can think of an "unique" number. Even emojis. That what "unicode" is.
But in the same way you don't pack your whole house in your luggage for the weekend, there is no real use in bringing the whole world's different alphabets and symbols on every computer or website.
So we have suitcases. Steamer trunks.
And not everything is sorted the same in these luggage.
So ? for example, commonly used in French, can become A? on a website that did not consider it useful.
Latin1 is a suitcase for traveling across the Americas, most of Africa, and Europe.
UTF-8 is more of a big travel bag, it's more inclusive.Last edited by Aggelos; 09-01-2024 at 09:03 PM.
