I think on B&B the state the rules in a sticky at the top of the forum then the posts are personally moderated. If a newbie then posts it is removed and a reminder of the rules posted in it's place.

Not sure I fully agree with stopping newbies from posting there. Yes, it's more of a risk but looking at a low post count tells you where they are and the buyer can make his own risk assesment before dropping lots of money.

On the other hand if a newbie came here first wanting to sell his fathers collection on 47 mint Escher Stones and 72 Dubl Duck Wonderedges I would hate to send him away till his post count was higher

I have to agree with what I think is the meat, of what Tony is saying here.... That being said, I would add, that we as a forum, seem to self-regulate very well, if a bad sale is made, the two parties seem to figure things out really fast between themselves... I personally would hate to see this forum start to become too regulated, and to full of rules, there is enough political correctness already out in the real world... Please lets try to keep, this world, running on common sense, and common decency.....

I would also prefer a little more justification. The "B&B does it" isn't enough for me.

OK so here is my take. I think newbs should be allowed to post WTB or WTT but not FS until a reasonable level is reached. it is 100 posts at B&B which I think is really high. Something like 20 or 30 might be more appropriate. I wish people showed up with their fathers collection more often but it doesn't happen at least not much. Ebay is where that goes usually. The idea would to be able to just keep the people off who show up TO sell something and that is it. The trouble with B&B is that everything there is taken WAY to seriously and it hurts the fun and make the tempers flare. I AM HONESTLY AFRAID TO SELL MY KITS THERE OR MY RAZORS cause of the way things get handled. I have almost 200 posts there but I just won't do it.

So here is a proposal. Limit the review section to 50 posts since there are members here for 2 years with 50 posts who pop up every now and then and the FS: to 30 so we know they are not an ebayer looking for a new market. Then seperate of the FT and WTB so that the buying and selling is its own place and the WTB and WTT doesn't get lost in the FS:

Like all of us, I look at all of the major shaving sights. I made my decision to join this site because of the “down to earthness” and common sense approach of this site. The other sites turned me off with their rules. Having to have a certain number of posts to trade or having to be a member to view pictures seems rather exclusive and snooty to me. What next - a secret handshake?

If a person’s first post is to sell something, we can make up our own mind as to buy it or not.

If a person’s first post is an off-base review it will get all of the respect that it deserves. A good group of people with great moderators makes for a well-regulated forum.

While I agree that buying from someone who is brand new to the forum may pose certain risks, I disagree with a "certain amount of posts" as a standard to hold someone too before they can sell or trade. I still believe that most people are decent in nature and aren't out to swindle others.

Setting a minimum number of posts standard might just encourage frivolous posting in order to reach the minimum, in which case someone who is out to swindle us will just post a bunch of "LOL" posts until they hit 50 or 100 and then they can start cheating us. If that's the case, all we've done is delayed an inevitable evil and not prevented it (which I don't think we can prevent it). An unscrupulous person won't care about forum rules or regulations. It's kind of like gun control: A criminal won't care the law forbids him from having a gun, he'll get one anyway, that's why he's a criminal.

I'm all about quality and not quantity, except when it comes to razors in which case I'm all about both.

Now, with all that said. I have some ocean front property in Arizona for sell. Who's interested?

I've been on this forum for about 3 months now. I've only started posting with any regularity in the last 2weeks in spite of logging on almost daily. My post count would be incredably low if a few people hadn't started a discussion about arkansas stones. I want to start selling a few razors I picked up in the near future, but I don't want to start making idiotic frivolous replies to threads just to bump up my numbers.

Btw I really love this forum and hope it doesn't change too much. However I do think the idea of having some standards for selling and buying is a good idea.

"B&B does it and so should we" wasn't the reason for me to start this thread.
I have noticed a couple of times people signing up, selling their stuff and never post again. I am not saying that's wrong, I just felt that it deserved some thought. It was just an issue I wanted to raise. I would hate to see SRP turn into a marketplace for those who merely want to save on ebay charges. Do we want a newbee buying a razor (or whatever) of disappointing quality from another newbee, thinking "this razor should be OK because it is on SRP's B/S/T forum".

For the sake of the argument: suppose a newbee who bought a zeepk on ebay would try to flog it here after a disappointing shave, selling it as "near mint, minimal honewear, used only once".

I'd allow newbs to do WTB threads since many of them just want to get started. However, FS and reviews should be restricted to more established members.
Maybe 10 posts and a request to the mods/admins.
Another option would be that people with under 10 posts have their threads tagged so their status is very obvious.
