Thread: What's special about SRP?

A lot of the best parts of SRP have been covered, but at the risk of being redundant...
-New comers are welcomed and encouraged.
-Members toss ideas back and forth trying to improve themselves and each other.
-Members here are innovative and share their projects and experiences with everyone so we can all learn something new, like Glen's tumbler idea or the new Whisker Map.
-Members who are making their own products: soaps, creams, aftershaves, restoration tools, restored razors, strops, and on and on...
-There is no other place with as much info on everything to do with straight razor shaving - from tips to learning how to shave, to detailed honing advice, to step by step restorations, to a huge database of razor manufacturers and their razors.
On top of all this, everyone is treated as equal. The experienced guys are asking for feedback and the newbies get tips from the founder. Where else can you get all that?

I can sign on any time of day or night from any place I happen to be (right now, I'm at work, but don't tell my boss) and read something that will inform, educate, amuse, infuriate or just plain amuse me. I can also write something that might inform, educate, amuse, infuriate or just plain amuse others. And we can do without being insulting or condescending. Sure, we talk mainly about razors but a whole lot more as well. The richness of experience in the members both shave-related an not, and as others have said, the willingness to share that experience is something I find unique. SRF has mad a big splash in the online community.

So many reasons I don't know where to start:
- I give great credit to Lynn for the way he conducts himself as the owner of this site. His reserve, wisdom and professionalism really mean a lot to me. I highly regard the fact that when Lynn does review something or comment on a product or technique, he does so only after thorough experimentation. IMO it's a cut above other sites in this way.
- We're big, but we're family.
- The get togethers are such a great thing, not only the ones we can go to personally, but also being able to see other get togethers online.
- You're right, SRP is the ONLY english speaking site dedicated first and foremost to straight razors, period. My interest, first and foremost is in straight razors; for me, prep, soaps, colognes, etc take a back seat.
- The helpfulness of members is refreshing.
I could go on and on. Thanks to all that are involved in making SRP what it is.

Then best thing about SRP is the people from Lynn all the way down to the newbies, from how the site is managed down to the member contributions. Everything else is just electrons!

To me it's just the general friendliness. I like the knowledge sharing because I want to know what others think. I already know the answers, particluarly for me. If 10 other people like to do something a certain way I want to know about it.
For example, guys who don't hone very well can sometimes strop really well. So, I want to know how the guys that strop well do it.
But, more and more I am relying on my own personal knowledge of straight shaving (and years of research from other sources) and just enjoying the friendly discussion.
The site could talk about pipe tobacco next week and I'd still be interested in hearing Bruno, Glen, Jimmy, Gugi, and Lynn's views on the subject. The subjects mean nothing to me anymore, but the people do.

Thanked: 1903A few things off the top of my head, in no particular order:
- High calibre senior members. Whether regular members, mentors, moderators, or developers: We retain a mix of skills and knowledge that is unparalleled.
- Motivated new joiners. People do not join because we offer them super deals with vendors, nor do they join because they are Lynn fanboys (no, Ivan, not gugi fanboys, either). They want to learn, and we offer knowledge. Which brings me to the next point:
- Breadth, width, and depth of knowledge offered. We outdo every other forum when it comes to knowledge of straight razors and straight razor shaving. Our Wiki is the single most valuable resource for all things straight shaving on the net. Others have been trying to plagiarise it, but fell at the first hurdle (technology).
- Expert advice. When you come to SRP with a straight shaving related problem, this problem will be solved.
- Expert reviews. Our members do not come here to learn about the latest Übershaver, totally rad superhone, or bestest/mostest/whateverest megacream. We put review items into a meaningful perspective, because we have used more than one item of a kind.
- Seniority. No bloated egos, no chest thumping, no showing off. We are here because we enjoy the community, and share what we know, without any need for getting a pat on the back from users we later rip off by selling them overpriced items. We just give.
- An active chat community that gets problems solved quickly and efficiently. Senior members are available more or less 24/7, and the help members can get is hands on, and ad free.
- We treat vendors with respect, and we treat them equally. Same for members selling razor related goods - the Classifieds are still the safest haven (albeit not perfect, of course) especially for beginners looking for decent kit at decent prices.
At the end of the day, it is the people that make the difference. And as far as forums specialising in straight razors are concerned, our members are something to be proud of. Which is why I thoroughly enjoy being here.
Regards,
